Campbellsville, Ky. – The Patriot volleyball team (16-7, 5-4 MSC) was in action last night when they traveled to Campbellsville, Ky. to take on Mid-South Conference foe Campbellsville (Ky.).
The Patriots used a stifling defense forcing the Tigers into a .114 hitting clip to come away with the 3-1 win. The Patriots were also able to take advantage of a 29 attacking errors and nine service errors by the Tigers (11-9, 3-4 MSC). St. Catharine’s defense also held a block party as they posted three solo blocks and 10 block assists.
Senior outside hitter, Rebecca Just (Louisville, Ky.) led the way on both offense and defense. She posted her 12th double-double after finishing with 16 kills and a season-high 20 digs. Just finished the night with a .364 hitting clip.
Mikaela Beck (Detroit, Mich.) also had a strong performance with 12 kills and .313 hitting percentage. Cat Hall (Louisville, Ky.) added 10 kills in 25 swings. Jordan Strickland (Lexington, Ky.) guided the Patriot offense with 44 assists and just two errors. Jodie Klein (Louisville, Ky.) helped the defense transition to offense with 16 digs. Freshman, Kinsey Shofner (Greensburg, Ky.) also pitched in on defense with a career-high 13 digs.
The Patriots took control from the opening serve in the first set. St. Catharine jumped out a 5-2 lead before the Tigers battled back to pull within one at 7-6. The Patriots responded with a 5-1 run to take a 12-7 lead. The Patriots closed the set out on 5-0 run to win the set 25-16.
In the second set it was the home team that took the early 11-8 lead. The Patriots battled back with a 9-3 run to take the lead 17-14. The Tigers never got closer than three to end the set as St. Catharine won the set 25-20.
The third set was a back and forth battle between both teams. It was a set that featured 11 ties, but Campbellsville was the only team to hold a lead throughout the set as they finished it off 25-21.
The Patriots wouldn’t be denied the match in the fourth set. After St. Catharine held an 8-6 advantage, they went on a 9-2 run to take a commanding 17-8 lead. The home team answered with a 5-1 run to cut the lead to five, but the Patriots wouldn’t be denied as they won the set 25-18 and the match 3-1.
St. Catharine will return to action on Tuesday, October 6th, when they take on Cumberlands (Ky.) in a “Battle of the Patriots”. Earlier this season it was Cumberlands who battled back from a 2-0 hole to win the match 3-2 over St. Catharine on September 8th.
