St. Catharine, Ky. -- It's not very often that there are 10 goals scored in one women's soccer match, but that's how many were scored on Saturday afternoon when the Patriot women's soccer team (5-7) defeated Oakland City (Ind.) 7-3.
It was a career day for freshman, Bethany Massey. The Oldham County, Ky. native netted the first hat-trick of her career to lead the Patriots in the win. Four other Patriots also found their name in the scoring column to finish off the 7-3 victory.
After the first 13 minutes of the game was scoreless, Massey netted her first goal of the game in the 14th minute. Rachel Palazzo (Marietta, Ga.) launched a free kick in the box and found Massey who fired the shot into the back of the net for the goal and the 1-0 lead.
Massey would strike again 16 minutes later in the 31st minute. This time it was Kindsay Miller-Riney (Bardstown, Ky.) who found a cutting Massey, who made a nifty move to get past the goal keeper and finished with her second goal of the game.
The Patriots tripled their lead in the 37th minute thanks to Vannah Moreland (Marietta, Ga.). Moreland had a breakaway to get past the defense and fired the ball past the keeper and into the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season
Just a few seconds later, St. Catharine pushed their lead to 4-0. This time it was Courtney Anderson (Louisville, Ky.) who scored her second goal of the season. After the Patriot defense forced a turnover, the ball made its way to Anderson who finished the transition goal.
The Mighty Oaks (4-9) cut into the lead to 4-1 just four minutes before the intermission. Allie Schechner found her name in the scoring column for the first of her three goals.
St. Catharine added to their lead nine minutes after halftime when Bethany Massey finished off her hat-trick in the 54th minute. Massey received a pass that hit her in stride as she finished the breakaway goal to make the lead 5-1.
Oakland City cut the lead to two after back-to-back goals from Schechner in the 59th and 63rd minutes, respectively, but the Patriots answered in the 68th minute when Nicole Schowalter (Dayton, Ky.) scored her first goal of the season. Rachel Palazzo got the play started when she played a perfect ball into the box that found Schowalter who fired it into the back of the net to make the lead 6-1.
St. Catharine scored their final goal in the 84th minute. This time it was Kindsay Miller-Riney who earlier assisted on a goal. Bryce Ashby (Oldham County, Ky.) made the pass to Miller-Riney who got behind the defense and finished the transition goal.
The Patriot offense dominated on the afternoon. They outshot the Mighty Oaks 17-8 including 13-4 in shots on goal. Emily Belt (Paducah, Ky.) played all 90 minutes in goal and finished with one save on the afternoon.St. Catharine will return to action this Friday when they travel to Lebanon, Tenn. to take on Mid-South Conference foe Cumberland (Tenn.). Their next home match is Wednesday, October 21, against Cumberlands (Ky.) at 5:30 p.m. ET.
