PATRIOT WRESTLERS HOST PURPLE AND GOLD WRESTLE-OFF'S

St. Catharine, Ky. – In preparation for the opening of their 2015-16 season, the Patriot wrestling team held their second annual Purple and Gold Wrestle-Off’s last night in Lourdes Hall.

“Last night was a great night for everyone involved,” noted head coach Spencer Adams. “It was good that most of the guys who haven’t had a chance to wrestle under the spotlight got their chance last night and some of them rose to the occasion and others didn’t. We got to see who is who when it comes down to match time.”

Last year it was the purple squad that got the best of the gold team, but this year the roles were reversed and it was the gold team that got the best of the purple team. Coaching the gold team this year was assistant coach, Gary Canter who tied the series up at one apiece.

The Patriot Grapplers hosted the wrestle-off’s to see who would earn the starting nod for their season opener on November 7th in the John Carroll University Duals in University Heights, Ohio. The Patriots who earned victories last night were:

“There were some guys who came out last night and impressed me. I thought TJ Edwards really came out and picked up a big win,” said Adams. Adams continued saying, “Some other guys include, Mitch Rusch looks like he has really improved, Mario Bell, I thought looked twice as good as where he was last year, and I though Keevi [Dekeevious Matlock] looked good.”

BJ Carman – who qualified for the National Tournament last season – looked to be in mid-season form. “BJ picked up right where he left off last season which is perfect and exactly what we wanted,” said Adams.

Adams also noted how his team has progressed in their second year as a program saying, “We are light-years ahead of where we were last year at this point. Last year we had few decent guys, but now we feel we have a strong line-up.”

During the offseason the Patriots added a new crop of talent to add to the group of returnees. “I thought the true freshman came out and really brought it last night. Some of the true freshman stars that I see include, Gage Branson, Andrew Dobben, and Deaken McCoy. They are consistent in practice and they have proved that they are ready for the college game.”

The Patriot Grapplers will open their 2015-16 slat on November 7th when they travel to University Heights, Ohio for the John Carroll University Duals.
