COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Mid-South Conference baseball coaches voted Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) as the favorite to claim the regular season title in 2016 in the MSC Preseason Coaches' Poll, conference officials announced today.
The Blue Raiders received 47 voting points and five of the eight first-place votes from the conference head coaches. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team. Lindsey Wilson reached the program's first NAIA World Series in 2015 after winning the MSC Tournament and the NAIA Opening Round - Kingsport Bracket last spring. The Blue Raiders finished 2015 with a 41-19 overall record.
Campbellsville finished a close second in the balloting. The Tigers -- the defending MSC regular season champions -- received 44 voting points and the final three first-place votes. Cumberland (Tenn.) is third in the poll with 36 voting points followed by St. Catharine (Ky.) with 30 voting points. The Patriots are coming off a 38-17 campaign which saw them reach the NAIA opening round for the first time in school history. They finished last year a half game out of the regular season top spot behind Campbellsville - losing to Lindsey Wilson in the MSC Tournament Championship game.
Georgetown's (Ky.) 25 voting points put the Tigers fifth in the preseason poll while Cumberlands' (Ky.) 22 voting points are sixth best. Shawnee State (Ohio) and Pikeville (Ky.) complete the eight-team poll with 13 and seven voting points, respectively.
The Mid-South Conference regular season begins March 11, with the MSC Tournament set for late April and into May at Bowling Green Ballpark in Bowling Green, Ky.
