Georgetown, Ky. – The St. Catharine College men’s basketball team (2-5, 0-1 MSC) was in an uphill battle tonight when they took on Georgetown (Ky.) in their Mid-South Conference opener. The Tigers are currently ranked No. 6 in the latest polls as they defeated the visiting Patriots 106-77.
The Patriots had four player score in double figures led by Chris Johnson (Bowling Green, Ky.) with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Nick Porter (Owensboro, Ky.) poured in a season-high 18 points. Brandon Bobb Jones (Wilmington, Del.) and Emory Bennett (Miami, Fla.) also scored in double-digits with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Georgetown (6-0, 1-0 MSC) opened up a 30-12 lead over the Patriots in the opening 10 minutes as they never trailed in the contest. St. Catharine cut into the lead, but never could get it below double digits as they trailed 53-34 at intermission.
The second half went like the first half. The Patriots got the lead down to as little at 14 with 17:16 remaining, but the Tigers’ had their lead grow back to as many as 29 on two different occasions in the final minutes.
The Tigers dominated the rebounding battle as they outrebounded the Patriots 49-30. The Tigers also scorched the nets shooting 53 percent from the field, whereas St. Catharine shot 40 percent. Both teams struggled from long distance as St. Catharine shot just 28 percent and Georgetown shot 33 percent.
The Patriots will return to action this Saturday when they hit the road for another MSC showdown against Shawnee State (Ohio). Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. ET.
