Rio Grande, Ohio – The St. Catharine women’s basketball team held a 69-57 lead heading into the final frame, but the Rio Grande (Ohio) Red Storm outscored the Patriots 39-14 in the final ten minutes turning a 20 point deficit into a 96-83 victory.
Cora Moore (Louisville, Ky.) hit a triple with to give the Patriots (4-11) a 68-48 lead with 2:47 remaining in the third period, but the Red Storm quickly cut the lead down to 12, 69-57, heading into the final 10 minutes.
The Red Storm (6-4) tied the game up on three separate occasions in the fourth quarter with the final tie coming at 77-77 with 4:08 remaining. From that point on the Patriots wouldn’t get any closer than four points.
St. Catharine trailed by as many as seven in the opening quarter, but they battled back and cut it to one when Moore drained a trey. Emilie Harrell (Madisonville, Tenn.) hit a layup to give the Patriots a one point advantage after one quarter of play.
The Patriots expanded on their lead to 42-33 at halftime after they won the second quarter 24-16. Coming out of the locker room, the Patriots went on a 9-2 run as their lead ballooned to 16. They pushed their lead out to it largest of the game at 20 late in the third quarter.
Cora Moore paced the Patriots with 22 points. Fifteen of her 22 came from three where she finished 5-of-9 for the game. Kayla Wilson (Corbin, Ky.) finished with 21 while her twin sister, Miranda Wilson (Corbin, Ky.) added 11. Emilie Harrell notched a new career-high with 13 points.
Patrice Tonge (Lebanon, Ky.) posted 10 rebounds to help the Patriots win the rebounding battle 34-31. For the game, the Patriots shot 47.5 percent and the Red Storm finished at 55.4 percent. St. Catharine connected on 11-of-26 (42.3 percent) from 3-point range while Rio shot 36.4 percent (4-11).St. Catharine will now have a short break to enjoy the holidays as they don’t return to the hardwood until January 12th when they host Wilberforce (Ohio) at 5 p.m. ET.
