St. Catharine, Ky. -- After falling to top-ranked Pikeville (Ky.) on Thursday night, the road didn’t get much easier for the St. Catharine men’s basketball team as they hosted Cumberlands (Ky.) on Saturday afternoon in Lourdes Hall.
St. Catharine led by as many as 11 early in the first half, but Cumberlands (13-6, 4-2 MSC) turned the 11-point deficit into a 25 point lead in the second frame en route to a 78-58 victory. SCC moves to 5-13 overall and 1-6 within the Mid-South Conference.
Emory Bennett (Miami, Fla.) led the way for St. Catharine with 21 points to go along with seven rebounds. Chris Johnson (Bowling Green, Ky.) was the only other Patriot in double figures with 14 points.
St. Catharine got off to a hot start to open the game using the trey as a lethal weapon. Johnson connected on a pair and Bryson Harris (Louisville, Ky.) added another to give SCC a 13-2 lead just over four minutes into the game.
Cumberlands answered the Patriots 13-2 run with a 23-6 spurt of their own to take a six point edge midway through the first. St. Catharine battled back to tie the game at 33 apiece, but once again Cumberlands answered with an 8-0 run to take a 41-33 lead into the locker room.
Things wouldn’t get any better for St. Catharine in the second half. Emory Bennett connected on a triple cutting the lead to six, 45-39, with 15:29 remaining. St. Catharine never got any closer than 13 from that point on as they fell to Cumberlands 78-58.
St. Catharine will return to the hardwood on Thursday, January 21st, when they travel to Campbellsville, Ky. for a conference tilt with Campbellsville (Ky.) at 8 p.m. ET.
