St. Catharine, Ky. -- The Patriot women’s basketball team did something on Saturday afternoon that they haven’t done in nearly a year, win a Mid-South Conference matchup.
The Patriots did just that as they defeated Cumberlands (Ky.) on Saturday afternoon, 70-58, snapping a 14 game losing streak within the Mid-South that dated back to January 22, 2015. On that day the Patriots upset No. 12 Shawnee State (Ohio).
St. Catharine had four players notch double figures led by Miranda Wilson (Corbin, Ky.) who tallied 16 points. Breanna Ball (Huber Heights, Ohio) and Cora Moore (Louisville, Ky.) added 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Patrice Tonge (Lebanon, Ky.) posted her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 13 rebounds. She was the only Patriot to pull down double-digit boards as Cumberlands (7-8, 0-5 MSC) edged SCC in the rebounding battle 41-40.
It was suffocating defense and an efficient offensive effort that led St. Catharine (6-12, 1-5 MSC). SCC shot an even 50 percent from the field (23-46) while their defense held UC to a 34 percent (24-70) shooting effort. St. Catharine connected on 5-of-13 (38 percent) from long range, whereas Cumberlands hit just 4-for-24 (16 percent) for the game.
The difference was the charity stripe where St. Catharine doubled Cumberlands up in attempts. SCC connected on 19 of their 32 free throw attempts while UC had 16 attempts, but only hit six for the game.
The opening frame saw the two team’s battle back-and-forth, but it was St. Catharine who took a 15-12 lead to the second period. The second period followed suit with the first with another seesaw battle, but once again it was SCC that took a 31-28 lead into the locker room.
The third period was an offensive explosion for the home team as they outscored Cumberlands 20-7. After the game was tied at 31 apiece, the SCC offense exploded with a 20-1 run to blow the game open. St. Catharine took a 51-35 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.
St. Catharine was in a familiar position that they had been in earlier in the season. Just over a month ago the Patriots led by 12 entering the final period on the road at Rio Grande (Ohio). They were unable hang on as they fell 96-83.
This time around the Patriots would finish the job in the fourth period and hang on for the win. Cumberlands made it interesting cutting the lead to 10, 61-51, but over the final 2:51 St. Catharine hit 6-of-8 from the charity stripe to seal the 70-58 win.
St. Catharine is back in action on Thursday, January 21st, when they hit the road for a conference battle with Campbellsville (Ky.) for a 6 p.m. tipoff.
