Campbellsville, Ky. -- The Patriot men’s basketball team (5-14, 1-6 MSC) trailed by just three tonight heading into the locker room at Campbellsville (Ky.), but the Tigers used a second half rally to spoil the upset minded Patriots en route to a 90-79 win.
The Patriots were led by Chris Johnson (Bowling Green, Ky.) who poured in a game-high 29 points to go along with nine rebounds. Brandon Bobb Jones (Wilmington, Del) posted his eighth double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Emory Bennett (Miami, Fla.) had another strong outing with 17 points while pulling down seven boards.
After Campbellsville (17-5, 4-4 MSC) jumped out to a 7-3 lead, St. Catharine responded with five unanswered to take their first lead of the game. The Patriots took their largest lead of the game at 19-16 midway through the half when Johnson converted a reverse layup.
Over the final 10 minutes and change of the first half, Campbellsville built as much as a six point edge as they took a 37-34 lead to the locker room. In the first half St. Catharine shot 40 percent (14-35) while the Tigers shot just 13-of-42 for 31 percent.
The home team came out firing in the second half. Over the opening four minutes of the second frame, Campbellsville went on a 15-6 run to expand their lead to 12. The Patriots never went away as they cut the lead to seven four times, but Campbellsville finished it off late 90-79.
It was a tale of two halves for both teams. After the Patriot defense held the Tigers to 31 percent shooting in the opening frame, Campbellsville torched the nets in the second half shooting 65 percent whereas the Patriots shot 45 percent.
The Patriots will take a break from Mid-South Conference play when they take on Kentucky State University on Monday, January 25, at 7:30 p.m. in Frankfort, Kentucky.
