St. Catharine, Ky. -- The Patriot women’s basketball team (6-15, 1-8 MSC) was in action on Saturday afternoon when they hosted fifth-ranked Shawnee State (Ohio). The Bears displayed their No. 5 ranking with an 80-62 victory over the Patriots.
The Patriots took their only lead of the game when Miranda Wilson (Corbin, Ky.) drained a triple to open the game giving the home team a 3-0 lead. The Bears (19-3, 7-1 MSC) answered with an 8-0 to take an 8-3 lead. From that point on the Bears took control.
Shawnee State led by as many 12 in the opening period as they took a 25-16 advantage into the second frame. The Patriot offense got going late in the second period when they trailed 35-24.
Cora Moore (Louisville, Ky.) ignited a 10-1 for the Patriots when she nailed a trey and then added a jumper. The run continued when Sasha Ruiz-Lopez (Ft. Myers, Fla.) dialed it up from deep and then Patrice Tonge (Lebanon, Ky.) capped the run off with a layup.
Shawnee State took a 40-35 lead into the locker room, but they began to build on their lead when they opened the third period on a 9-3 run. St. Catharine responded when they cut the lead to six, but the Bears ended the quarter on a 12-1 run taking a 63-46 lead into the final stanza.
The Patriots struggled to cut into the Shawnee State lead in the final frame. St. Catharine cut the lead to 13, but never could get any closer as the visitors walked away with an 80-62 win.
The Patriots were led by Cora Moore and Sasha Ruiz-Lopez. The duo finished with 15 points apiece while Ruiz-Lopez pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
St. Catharine is back in action on Wednesday when they travel to the “Hoosier State” to take on Oakland City (Ind.). They will return to conference play when they host Campbellsville (Ky.) on Saturday, February 6th, with tipoff set for 2 p.m. ET in Lourdes Hall.
