Mobile, Ala. -- The St. Catharine baseball team opened their 2016 slate today down south in Mobile, Alabama when they took on the University of Mobile (1-1). The Patriots (1-1) fell in the opener of the doubleheader 8-2, but battled back winning the second game 7-0.
The Patriots struck first in the opening inning thanks to speed of Josh Wenning (Palmyra, Ind.). Wenning led off the game with a single to left and then made his way to third after stealing second and third. His steal of third caused an errant throw from the Rams catcher as he scored to make it 1-0.
Mobile came back in the bottom of the second taking a 2-1 after two complete. The Patriots tied it up in the fourth when they scored one run on three hits. Drew Kissel (Jeffersonville, Ind.) tied it up when he singled scoring Nicco Lollio (Brownstown, Mich.) from second who led off the inning with a single.
In the final three innings St. Catharine could only muster two hits against the Rams pitchers. The duo of Josh Shelley and Troy Andrews silenced the Patriot offense combining to allow just six hits and one earned run while striking out eight.
Senior Daniel Lerma (Oxnard, Calif.) started the game and took the loss allowing eight hits and five runs in 4.2 innings of work. Austin Willis-Greene (Manhattan, N.Y.) finished out the fifth while Nathan Getzin (Louisville, Ky.) allowed three runs on three hits in the sixth.
In the backend of the doubleheader the Patriots got six scoreless innings from junior Joan Pena (New York, N.Y.). Pena silenced the Rams’ batters allowing just five hits while striking out five. Tyler Jones (Huntington Beach, Calif.) fanned a pair in a scoreless seventh.
Once again the Patriots struck first in the opening inning taking a 1-0 lead. The Bat Pats then exploded in the third scoring four runs on three hits. After a hit by pitch and a single to open the inning, Nicco Lollio blasted a three-run shot to right giving the Patriots a 4-0 lead. Javier Torres (San Ysidro, Calif.) made the lead 5-0 after the third with an RBI single.
St. Catharine was back at it in the top half of the fourth. After Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) led off the inning with a triple, Hector Quinones (Barceloneta, P.R.) scored Bohorquez on an RBI single.
Torres was back at it in the in the top of the fifth inning. This time Torres took a 0-1 pitch and blasted it over the left field fence for a solo home run giving the Pats a 7-0 lead. The lead was more than enough for Pena and Jones who sealed it for a 7-0 win.
Quinones led the way at the plate going 4-for-4 with an RBI. Lollio finished with three RBI’s while Torres added a pair of hits and two RBI’s. Bohorquez scored three runs and added a two-hit effort in the win.
