Mobile, Ala. -- For the second day in a row the Patriot baseball team earned a split on the road at Mobile (Ala.). This time around the Patriots won the opener 5-1, but fell in the nightcap 5-3 as both teams finish the weekend 2-2 overall.
In the opener the Patriot bats battered the Rams’ pitching for five runs on 11 hits. The Bat Pats also got a strong outing from sophomore right-hander Marvin Galarza (Arecibo, PR). Galarza allowed one run on seven hits in 5.1 innings of work. Austin Willis-Greene (Manhattan, N.Y.) pitched the final 1.2 innings allowing just one hit.
St. Catharine got the scoring started in the second with a pair of runs on three hits. Nicco Lollio (Brownstown, Mich.) led off the inning with a double; then two batters later, Drew Kissel (Jeffersonville, Ind.) took a 2-0 pitch over the right field fence giving his team a 2-0 lead.
The Rams cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second, but the Patriots answered with one of their own in the third. Hector Quinones (Barceloneta, PR) doubled to left-center driving in Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) from first who led off the inning with a single.
The Patriots added another in the fourth on an RBI-single by Reid Battles (Denton, Texas). Battles wouldn’t stop there as he added to the lead in the sixth. This time around he tripled to center scoring Tyler Devine (Harrodsburg, Ky.) who reached on a HBP.
The cushion was more than enough for the duo of Galarza and Willis-Greene. Quinones, Lollio, Kissel and Battles all collected two hits in the game while Kissel and Battles each drove in a pair. Quinones also added an RBI.
The nightcap didn’t go as well for the Patriots. The Patriot offense scored three runs on eight hits, but the Patriot pitchers allowed five runs on seven hits as the home team won the finale 5-3.
The home team struck first with one run in the first inning, but the Bat Pats responded with one of their own in the fourth thanks to Drew Kissel. Kissel singled home Nicco Lollio tying the game up a 1-1.
Mobile battled back in the bottom of the fourth when they scored three runs. They added another in the fifth before the Patriot offense struck for a run in the sixth when Santiago Arce (Chula Vista, Calif.) doubled down the right field line scoring Quinones from second.
St. Catharine added one more in the seventh on an RBI-single by Josh Wenning (Palmyra, Ind.), but the Rams were too much as they won the nightcap 5-3 to split the four-game series.
Starter Hector Quinones took the loss for the Patriots allowing three runs – two earned – one three hits. James Davenport (Louisville, Ky.) and Peyton Johnson (Louisville, Ky.) both allowed one run on two hits while Johnson’s run in the fifth was unearned.
The Bat Pats will return to the diamond next weekend for a four-game set with Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) beginning Friday, February 12. The Lions are ranked No. 18 in the preseason coaches’ poll.
