St. Catharine, Ky. – The St. Catharine wrestling team was back in action on Wednesday night when they hosted Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.) and No. 11 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) in a tri-match. The Patriots first defeated Lindenwood-Belleville 41-6, but fell in the nightcap to the Blue Raiders 33-6.
David Hernandez (Lexington, Ky.) got the Patriots started on the right foot when he picked up a 15-5 major decision over Jaln’ Gomilla to give his team a 4-0 lead over Lindenwood-Belleville.
The lead ballooned to 10-0 after Cole Tawney (Gallipolis, Ohio) made a nifty reversal to pin Jesse Martinelli at 2:09. Anthony Ashford (Dayton, Ky.) and Garrett Carter (Macedonia, Ohio) followed Tawney’s pin up with pins at 141 and 149, respectively pushing the lead to 22-0.
Then at 157, Keevi Matlock (Hopkinsville, Ky.) earned a major decision securing four points for the Patriots. Midway through the match the Patriots held a 26-0 lead heading into the final five weight classes.
Shelby Floyd (Upton, Ky.) won a hard fought match at 165 winning by sudden victory in the first overtime. After three periods, the match was tied at one apiece, but in the first overtime Floyd got a takedown to come away with the 3-1 decision.
Lindenwood-Belleville got on the board at 174 when Josh Robinson – ranked 16th at 174 – scored an 8-4 decision over Mitch Rusch (Louisville, Ky.). Ci'Vaughn Green (Louisville, Ky.) got the Patriots back on track with a pin at 5:45 in the 184 weight class.
Brennan Boykin (Louisville, Ky.) fell in a hard fought match against Jonathan Garcia at 197 by a 6-5 decision. Deaken McCoy (Galion, Ohio) capped the match off at 285 when he earned a victory by forfeit to seal the 41-6 victory.
After defeating Lindenwood-Belleville, the Patriots would take on 11th ranked Lindsey Wilson in the nightcap.
After the Blue Raiders picked up a pin at 125, Cole Tawney took Brady Moser to the limit at 133. Moser – ranked 16th at 133 – was able to win the match 7-5 after he got a reversal in the second tiebreaker session.
At 141, Anthony Ashford lost a hard fought match to Daniel Leonard, who is ranked seventh at 141, 5-3. Keevi Matlock got the Patriots on the scoreboard after picking up a 10-7 victory at 157.
The Blue Raiders extended their lead to 15-3 after the 157 weight class, but Shelby Floyd cut into the lead at 165 after he scored a 7-5 win over Logan Hatfield. Floyd’s win at 165 was the last win for the Patriots as the Blue Raiders won the next four including three by pin to come away with the 33-6 victory.
The Patriots are back in action this Saturday when they host Cumberland (Tenn.) in a Mid-South Conference showdown at 6 p.m. ET in Lourdes Hall.
