St. Catharine, Ky. -- Just one day after getting a split with Purdue Calumet (Ind.) on opening day, the St. Catharine softball team (1-3) was back in action on Saturday afternoon when they hosted Calumet (Ind.).
Game 1: St. Catharine 1, Calumet 10
In the opener of the doubleheader, the Crimson Wave (4-8) struck first with a pair of runs in the second inning. They made the lead 5-0 with they scored three in the fourth inning.
The Patriots finally got on the board when they scored one run on two hits in the fourth inning. The big hit came off the bat of Carly Benz (Brooks, Ky.). Benz took the first pitch and lofted it into the air as it sailed over the fence for a solo home run.
Unfortunately for the Patriots, that would be the only run that they would score as the Crimson Wave scored two more in the fifth and three in the seventh to win the opener of the doubleheader 10-1.
Patriot starter Tiffany Wickline (Georgetown, Ky.) took the loss moving to 1-1 on the season. Wickline pitched 4.2 innings and allowed seven runs on six hits.
Game 2: St. Catharine 6, Calumet 12
In the nightcap, the Patriot offense came alive as they built a 6-2 lead heading into the fifth inning. Then the Crimson Wave began to comeback as they scored two in the fifth, five in the sixth and three in the seventh en route to the 12-6.
Back-to-back singles by Wickline and Taylor Lewis (Spring, Texas) led off the first inning for the Patriots. A sac bunt moved the two up a base, while a passed ball scored Wickline as Lewis advanced to third.
Benz was back at it with a single to score Lewis from third. Benz then stole second and scored on a single by Brittany McKee (Somerset, Ky.). McKee would score two batters later on an error making the lead 4-0 after the first.
The Crimson Wave cut the lead in half when they scored a pair of runs in the second inning, but the Patriots answered with two more runs in the third inning. Benz opened the inning with a walk, then McKee launched one over the left field fence for two-run home run.
After the home run, the Patriot lead was 6-2, but the offense went quite as they tallied just two hits over the final three innings as Calumet began to battle back. They scored a pair in the fifth, five in the sixth and they added three in the seventh to seal the 12-6 win.
Jennifer Ortega (Delano, Calif.) stared the second game and allowed nine runs – eight earned – on eight hits. Ortega took the loss and moves to 0-2 on the season.St. Catharine is back in action on Wednesday, February 24th, when they travel to Cincinnati, Ohio to take on Cincinnati Christian (Ohio) at 5 p.m. ET.
