St. Catharine, Ky. – The St. Catharine baseball team (9-4) has caught fire as of late as they had won five in a row coming into Tuesday’s doubleheader against Cincinnati Christian (Ohio). Their win streak moved to seven after they swept the twinbill over the Eagles (0-4) at Edelen-Haydon Field.
Game 1: St. Catharine 12, Cincinnati Christian 0
In the opener of the doubleheader, Conner Lindsay (Nicholasville, Ky.) and Dylan Manley (Frankfort, Ky.) combined for a three-hit shutout. Lindsay picked up the win allowing two hits in five innings of work. Manley allowed just one hit in two innings on the bump.
The Bat Pats jumped on the Eagles with three runs in the first inning. Hector Quinones (Barceloneta, PR) came up big in the inning with a two-run single, while Evan Smith (Jacksonville, Fla.) capped the inning off with a sac fly.
St. Catharine came up with six more runs in the fourth on three hits and a key Cincinnati Christian error. Cody Kollenberg (PeeWee Valley, Ky.) notched an RBI-single, then Josh Wenning (Palmyra, Ind.) reached on an error that opened the door for the big inning.
The final three runs for the Patriots came in the sixth. Wenning reached on a walk to open the inning. Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) then tripled scoring Wenning from first. Two batters later, Nicco Lollio (Brownstown, Mich.) doubled scoring Bohorquez.
Quinones led the way with three RBI’s to go with two runs scored, while Kollenberg and Bohorquez collected two RBI’s. Wenning didn’t record a hit, but scored three runs with one RBI. Santiago Arce (Chula Vista, Calif.) went 3-for-4 at the plate and finished with one RBI.
Game 2: St. Catharine 7, Cincinnati Christian 3
In the nightcap the Patriot offense collected just five hits, but scored seven runs en route to the 7-3 win to secure the doubleheader sweep. The big inning for the Patriots came in the fourth when they put five runs on the board.
Freshman right-hander, Joseph Martin (Fort Thomas, Ky.) picked up his first collegiate win going four innings allowing one unearned run on two hits to go with five strikeouts. Derek Jones (Mt. Washington, Ky.) pitched two innings allowed two unearned runs on one hit. Quinones pitched a hitless seventh inning with two strikeouts.
The Patriots took a 2-0 lead after scoring two runs in the third inning. The Eagles cut the lead in half with a run in the fourth, but the Patriots came through with five in the bottom half taking a 7-1 lead. Cincinnati Christian added two runs in the sixth making the final score 7-3.
Nicco Lollio led the way at the plate for the Patriots going 1-for-3 with two RBI’s. Alfredo Bohorquez collected two hits to go with one RBI and two runs scored.
Up next: The Patriots are back in action this weekend when they host Madonna (Mich.) for a four-game set. The series begins with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. ET.
