BAT PATS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER WITH MADONNA

St. Catharine, Ky. -- The St. Catharine baseball team (10-5) saw their seven game win streak come to an end today when they dropped a 2-1 decision to Madonna (Mich.), but they split the twinbill after they won the second game 10-0. The two teams return to the diamond on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. ET for another doubleheader.

The opening game of the doubleheader on Saturday afternoon was a pitcher’s duel as both offenses combined for just seven hits. The Crusaders (3-2) scored single runs in the second and fifth innings to come away with the 2-1 victory.

Senior right-hander, Daniel Lerma (Oxnard, Calif.) pitched well for the Patriots, but ended up taking the loss moving to 1-3 on the season. Lerma allowing two runs – one earned – on four hits, Derek Jones (Mt. Washington, Ky.) pitched a hitless seventh with one strikeout.

St. Catharine entered the bottom of the seventh needing two runs to tie the game and three to win. Evan Smith (Jacksonville, Fla.) reached on an error to open the inning and was later put out on a fielder’s choice. Drew Kissel (Jeffersonville, Ind.) then reached on a walk.

Will Broady (Greenville, Ky.) was called upon to pinch run for Kissel. Tyler Devine (Harrodsburg, Ky.) cut the lead in half with a single scoring Broady. The Patriots had the tying run at second base, but a strikeout and a fly out ended the game.

Evan Piechota picked up the win for Madonna allowing just two hits in six innings of work. Bobby St. Pierre took the save allowing just the one run on one hit in the seventh.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Patriot offense exploded with 10 runs on 10 hits as they got another strong outing from Joan Pena (New York, N.Y.) on the bump. Pena didn’t allow a run while surrendering just one hit with seven strikeouts in six innings of work. Nathan Getzin (Louisville, Ky.) allowed two hits in a scoreless seventh.

The Patriots struck first in the second inning with four runs on two hits. Devine collected a two-run single, while Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) hit an RBI single and Hector Quinones (Barceloneta, P.R.) tallied an RBI with a sac fly in the inning.

The Patriots came back with two more in the third inning thanks to Reid Battles (Denton, Texas) who hit a triple to deep center scoring a pair. Tyler Devine was back at it in the fifth when he added an RBI single making the lead 7-0 heading into the sixth.

The Patriots capped the 10-0 win off with three runs on two hits in the sixth inning. In the inning Kissel hit a sac fly, while Devine added an RBI double. Josh Wenning (Palmyra, Ind.) collected a RBI after reaching on a bases loaded walk.

Devine led the way at the plate going 4-for-4 with four RBI’s and two runs scored. Battles added a two-hit day with a pair of RBI’s. Wenning, Bohorquez, Quinones and Drew Kissel all tallied an RBI in the win.
