St. Catharine, Ky. -- The St. Catharine baseball team (16-6) extended their win streak to six on Tuesday afternoon when they defeated Indiana University Southeast 10-7 at Edelen-Haydon Field.
Freshman right-hander, Joseph Martin (Fort Thomas, Ky.) moved to 3-0 on the season after picking up the victory. Martin tossed 5.2 innings allowing one run on four hits to go along with three strikeouts. Martin got some help from his defense that turned three double plays.
Derek Jones (Mt. Washington, Ky.) entered the game in a bases loaded jam in the sixth, but worked his way out of it with by ending the inning with a strikeout. Jones finished with 1.1 innings allowing one run. James Davenport (Louisville, Ky.) tossed an inning allowing one run.
After Martin tossed a 1-2-3 first inning, the Patriot offense went to work in the bottom half where they scored two runs on two hits. Tyler Devine (Harrodsburg, Ky.) delivered the big hit in the inning with a two-run single giving St. Catharine a 2-0 lead after one complete.
The Patriots were back at it in the third inning with one run making the lead 3-0. Josh Wenning (Palmyra, Ind.) led the inning off with a walk and moved to second on a sac bunt. After he stole second, Hector Quinones (Barceloneta, PR) hit a sac fly scoring Wenning from third.
St. Catharine continued to add to their lead with three runs on in the fifth inning. Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) delivered a sac fly in the inning, while Nicco Lollio (Brownstown, Mich.) hit an RBI double and Devine added an RBI single.
The Grenadiers (7-6) scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings before the Patriots got three of their own in the seventh. Hector Quinones delivered the big hit with three-run home run to the opposite field gap in right-center field.
The Patriots added a run in the eighth inning on a Grenadier error as IUS made one last run at in the ninth inning when they hit a grand slam, but the Patriots held on for the 10-7 win.
Quinones led the way at the plate going 2-for-2 with four RBI’s and three runs scored. Devine added two hits and three RBI’s, while Bohorquez and Lollio each collected an RBI and a run scored. Josh Wenning didn’t have a hit, but reached base three times scoring three runs.
St. Catharine is back in action on Thursday afternoon when they take on Oakland City (Ind.) in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. ET at Edelen-Haydon Field. Live stats will be available for both games here.
