St. Catharine, Ky. -- The Patriot baseball team (18-6) extended their win streak to a season-high eight games on Wednesday after they swept a doubleheader over Oakland City (Ind.) at Edelen-Haydon Field.
The Patriots came from behind and won a wild first game 12-8. The excitement came in the second game where three Patriot pitchers combined to throw a no-hitter en route to the 9-0 victory over the Mighty Oaks (4-8).
In that second game, Dylan Manley (Frankfort, Ky.) started the game lasting four innings. Carlos Cespedes (Santo Domingo, D.R.) came in the fifth and tossed two innings setting up Jake McCoy (Mesa, Ariz.) who nailed it down in the seventh.
Game 1: St. Catharine 12, Oakland City 8
Alex Knowles (Huntington Beach, Calif.) picked up his first win of the season allowing one run on three hits in 3.2 innings of work. Derek Jones (Mt. Washington, Ky.) pitched the final 1.1 innings and didn’t allow a hit.
After the Mighty Oaks scored five runs in the first inning, the Patriots answered with five of their own in the bottom half of the inning. The big hit came off the bat of Nicco Lollio (Brownstown, Mich.) who hit a solo home run over the right field fence.
The Mighty Oaks came back with two more runs in the second inning taking a 7-5 lead. St. Catharine answered with two of their own in the third inning, before they took an 11-7 lead in the fourth inning when they scored four runs.
Lollio was back at when he led off the fifth inning. He was down to his final strike, but fought back when he lofted the ball in the air as it barely cleared the right field fence for his second home run of the day. Oakland City added a run in the sixth as the Patriots won 12-8.
Lollio led the way at the plate going 2-for-3 with two RBI’s and two runs scored. Evan Smith (Jacksonville, Fla.) added a 3-for-4 day scoring three times. Cody Kollenberg (Peewee Valley Ky.) collected two hits and three RBI’s, while Hector Quinones (Barceloneta, PR) posted three runs batted in. Three other Patriots also collected an RBI in the win.
Game 2: St. Catharine 9, Oakland City 0
In the nightcap, the Patriots got a strong outing from Dylan Manley, Carlos Cespedes and Jake McCoy as they combined for the no-hitter en route to the 9-0 victory.
The Patriots scored early and often on the Mighty Oaks. They took a 1-0 advantage after the first inning when Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) hit a double down the left field line that scored Josh Wenning (Palmyra, Ind.) from first.
St. Catharine doubled their lead in the second inning on an RBI single by Reid Battles (Denton, Texas). Then in the third inning the Patriot offense erupted to the tune of five runs on six hits.
In that inning Nicco Lollio hit an RBI double, while Tyler Devine, Evan Smith and Will Broady (Greenville, Ky.) all collected an RBI single. The final run scored on a pitch in the dirt that bounced away from the catcher.
The Patriots continued to add to their lead in the fourth inning thanks to the power of Hector Quinones. Quinones led off the inning and took a 2-0 pitch that sailed over the right field fence for his second home run in as many days.
St. Catharine added one final run in the fifth inning when once again it was Quinones. Reid Battles led the inning off with a single, then three batters later scored on a sac fly by Quinones.
The eight run cushion was more than enough for the Patriot pitchers as they cruised to the 9-0 victory. Battles led the way at the plate going 3-for-3 with two RBI’s, while Quinones added two hits and two RBI’s. Bohorquez, Lollio, Devine, and Broady all collected an RBI in the win.
Up Next: The Patriots will return to the diamond this weekend when they open Mid-South Conference play with a three-game set at Georgetown (Ky.). The Tigers were picked to finish fifth in the MSC based on the preseason coaches’ poll.
