Williamsburg, Ky. -- The Patriot softball team (14-8, 1-1 MSC) returned to diamond on Friday afternoon when they traveled to Williamsburg, Ky. to take on Cumberlands (Ky.) to open Mid-South Conference play.

Cumberlands (11-6, 1-1 MSC) won the opener of the doubleheader 12-2 in five innings, but St. Catharine battled back winning the second game 13-4 in five innings. The same two teams are back in action tomorrow for another doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. ET.

Game 1: St. Catharine 2, Cumberlands 12

Coming into conference play Tiffany Wickline had won in her last seven outings, but that streak ended when she took the loss in the opener. The Georgetown, Ky. native tossed 1.1 innings and allowed six runs on four hits. She falls to 8-3 on the season after the loss.

Lexi Fugate (Bedford, Ind.) followed Wickline and also tossed 1.1 innings. Fugate allowed six runs – five earned – on seven hits. Meghan Wolford (Louisville, Ky.) pitched the final 1.1 innings allowing just two hits.

UC took a 7-0 lead after the first two innings before St. Catharine got on the board with two in the third. Carly Benz (Brooks, Ky.) pushed the first runner across with an RBI single and Brittany McKee (Somerset, Ky.) followed suite with an RBI single as well.

The two runs in the third inning was the only offense that the Patriots could come up with as Cumberlands added five of their own in the bottom of the third en route to the 12-2 victory.

Five different Patriots recorded a hit in the game with Benz and McKee leading the way with an RBI each. Fugate also collected a hit and a run scored, while Emily Fenwick (Lebanon, Ky.) and Caitlyn Blair (LaGrange, Ky.) tallied the final two hits for SCC.

Game 2: St. Catharine 13, Cumberlands 4

The nightcap was a complete turnaround for the visitors as St. Catharine used an eight run second inning to fuel the 13-4 victory. Jennifer Ortega (Delano, Calif.) moved to 4-4 on the season with the win. Ortega pitched the complete five innings allowing four runs on seven hits.

After neither team scored in the opening inning, the St. Catharine offense exploded with eight runs in the second inning. Brittany McKee and Kelsey Gravens (Mt. Washington, Ky.) delivered the big hits in the inning and came away with two RBI’s apiece.

Cumberlands battled back with two in the bottom half of the inning, but St. Catharine responded with two more in the third. Taylor Lewis (Spring, Texas) pushed the first run across with an RBI single, while Tiffany Wickline scored the second run on a pitch in the dirt.

St. Catharine didn’t stop there as they added to their lead with three in the fourth. Jennifer Ortega helped her own cause with an RBI single, while Wickline and Lewis followed suite with a pair of RBI singles of their own.

Cumberlands tried to battle back with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, but the Patriot offense proved to be too much as they came away with the 13-4 win.

Wickline and Lewis led the way at the dish with each collecting three hits and a pair of RBI’s. Gravens and McKee also tallied a two RBI’s, while Benz and Ortega each finished with one RBI each. Alexis Lewis (Spring, Texas) also posted a hit and an RBI.
