St. Catharine, Ky. -- The St. Catharine baseball team was in action on Friday afternoon when they hosted Campbellsville (Ky.) for a twinbill at Edelen-Haydon Field.
The opener went into extras after neither team scored in the first nine innings. The Tigers (15-8, 2-3 MSC) scored four runs in the 11th inning to come away with the 4-0 victory. The Patriots battled back to salvage the doubleheader after winning the second game 4-3.
Game 1: St. Catharine 0, Campbellsville 4
The first game was a true pitcher’s duel as neither offense was able to get going. Senior right-hander Daniel Lerma (Oxnard, Calif.) gave his team a quality start on the mound. Lerma allowed just four hits over his nine innings of work.
Junior Jake McCoy (Mesa, Ariz.) took the loss for the Patriots allowing four runs – three earned – on two hits in his 1.1 innings on the rubber. Austin Willis-Greene (Manhattan, N.Y.) pitched the final 0.2 innings and allowed one hit.
The Tigers best chance to score came in the seventh inning when they had a runner advance to third with two outs, but Lerma stranded the runner there. St. Catharine had a runner at second with one out in the fifth and ninth innings, but never could come up with the key hit.
The Patriots struggled against the duo of Nick Prebleck and Jake Pannunzio. Prebleck tossed 8.1 innings allowing just two hits to go with his six strikeouts. Pannunzio took home the win allowing one hit in 2.2 innings.
Campbellsville got their offense going when they scored four runs on four hits in the inning en route to the 4-0 win. Nicco Lollio (Brownstown, Mich.), Evan Smith (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Reid Battles (Denton, Texas) were the only Patriots to tally a hit in the game.
Game 2: St. Catharine 4, Campbellsville 3
After the Bat Pats collected just three hits in the opener, the offense came alive in the nightcap with 12 base knocks. The Patriots scored single runs in the second, fourth, fifth and sixth innings to come away with the 4-3 win.
Joan Pena (New York, N.Y.) picked up the win to go to 5-1 on the season. Pena tossed 6.2 innings allowing three runs – one earned – on five hits to go with his five strikeouts. Jake McCoy picked up his fourth save of the season after nailing down the final out in the seventh.
The Patriots got on the board first with a run in the second inning. Tyler Devine (Harrodsburg, Ky.) reached on an error to lead the inning off.Two batters later, Evan Smith drove home Devine with an RBI single to give his team a 1-0 lead.
After Campbellsville tied it up with a run in the top half of the fourth inning, the Patriots regained the lead in the bottom half. This time it was Carlos Cespedes (Santo Domingo, DR) who scored Devine – who led off the inning with a base knock.
The Patriot bats were back at it in the fifth inning when they pushed home another run. Nicco Lollio came through with the RBI single that scored Josh Wenning (Palmyra, Ind.) – who led the inning off with a single.
St. Catharine added an important insurance run in the sixth inning on a key error that made the score 4-1 heading to the seventh. The Tigers made it interesting and got the tying run into scoring position, but Jake McCoy was able to nail down the final out to seal the 4-3 victory.It was a balanced attack from the Patriots with everyone in the starting lineup recording a hit. Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) the way going 2-for-2 at the plate. Smith and Cespedes collected two hits and one RBI each, while Lollio finished with the other RBI. Tyler Devine also finished with a hit and two runs scored.
