Owensboro, Ky. -- The St. Catharine baseball team (22-9) hit five home runs tonight when they defeated Brescia (Ky.) 13-9 in Owensboro, Kentucky.
The Patriots led off the game with back-to-back-to-back jacks when Josh Wenning (Palmyra, Ind.), Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) and Hector Quinones (Barceloneta, PR) all hit solo home runs in the inning.
Then later on in the seventh inning, Nicco Lollio (Brownstown, Mich.) blasted a two-run bomb and Tyler Devine (Harrodsburg, Ky.) made it back-to-back home runs when he belted a solo shot to left field.
Derek Jones (Mt. Washington, Ky.) picked up his first win of the season in relief. Jones fanned four in three innings of work while allowing one run on one hit. James Davenport (Louisville, Ky.) finished the game out allowing one run on three hits with two strikeouts.
Sophomore right-hander, Conner Lindsay (Nicholasville, Ky.) started the game and lasted three innings allowing four runs on seven hits. Joseph Martin (Fort Thomas, Ky.) came on in relief and pitched one inning allowing three runs on two hits.
The Bearcats (7-21) scored two in the first and two in the third to take a 4-3 lead into the fourth. The lead was short lived after the Patriots scored five runs on three hits in the fourth.
Hector Quinones ripped an RBI single down and two batters later, Tyler Devine was hit by a pitch that forced home a run. Then Evan Smith (Jacksonville, Fla.) roped a double that scored a pair and then Devin scored on an error making the lead 8-4 after four.
Brescia scored three in the bottom half of the fourth, but the Patriots battled back with one of their own in the sixth. Chance Bodine (Bardstown, Ky.) reached base on an error that scored Carlos Cespedes (Santo Domingo, DR).
St. Catharine scored four more in the seventh to push their lead to 13-7 heading into the bottom of the seventh. Brescia scored one in the seventh and another in the ninth to make the final score 13-9.
Quinones led the way at the plate going 4-for-6 with three RBI’s and three runs scored. Bohorquez and Wenning each collected two hits, an RBI and three and two runs, respectively. Smith added two hits and two RBI’s. Lollio and Devine each tallied two RBI’s and two runs scored, while Bodine added an RBI.St. Catharine jumps back into Mid-South Conference play this weekend when they host Cumberland (Tenn.) for a three-game series. The series begins Friday with a single game at 3 p.m. ET, then the two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m. ET.
