St. Catharine, Ky. – The Patriot baseball team (23-11, 4-5 MSC) saw their four game win streak come to an end today when they were swept by Cumberland (Tenn.) Edelen-Haydon Field.
The Phoenix (19-16, 4-5 MSC) come away with the 10-8 win in the opener and then in the second game they won the series two games to one after defeating the home team 6-0.
Game 1: St. Catharine 8, Cumberland 10
After the game was tied at eight all heading into the final inning, Cumberland scored two in the top of the ninth to come away with the 10-8 win. Austin Willis-Greene (Manhattan, N.Y.) took the loss after allowing a pair of unearned runs in the ninth.
Willis-Greene (0-1) started the ninth and allowed a one-out base hit and a walk. Jake McCoy (Mesa, Ariz.) then entered the game and allowed a single that brought both runners home after a passed ball put the runners in scoring position.
Junior right-hander, Marvin Galarza (Arecibo, PR) started the game allowing seven runs on eight hits in 2.1 innings of work. Joseph Martin (Fort Thomas, Ky.) came on in relief in the third inning and tossed 4.2 innings allowing one run on one hit.
Cumberland got on the board with three runs in the first inning, but the Patriots answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half. Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) ripped an RBI triple in the inning and Nicco Lollio (Brownstown, Mich.) collected an RBI on a ground out.
The Phoenix added three runs in the second and another in the third to take a 7-2 lead, but St. Catharine battled back with a run in the third and a four run fifth inning tying the game at 7-7.
The Patriots took an 8-7 lead in the sixth inning thanks to an RBI single by Bohorquez, but Cumberland answered with one of their own in the top half of the seventh before they scored two more in the ninth to walk away with the 10-8 win.
Josh Wenning (Palmyra, Ind.) led the way at the plate after reaching base safely in five plate appearances. Wenning finished the day going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two walks. Alfredo Bohorquez finished with a 2-for-4 day with two RBI and two runs scored.
Hector Quinones (Barceloneta, PR) collected three RBI’s in two hits and a pair of runs. Nicco Lollio and Tyler Devine (Harrodsburg, Ky.) each finished with two hits, while Lollio had two RBI’s and Devine tallied one run batted in.
Game 2: St. Catharine 0, Cumberland 6
In the nightcap, the Bat Pats fell silent as they failed to crack the scoreboard as they had just five hits in the 6-0 loss. Joan Pena (New York, N.Y.) took the loss after allowing four runs – three earned – on six hits. Pena (5-2) finished with six strikeouts in his five innings on the bump.
Derek Jones (Mt. Washington, Ky.) got one out in the sixth inning and allowed one run, while James Davenport (Louisville, Ky.) finished the 1.2 innings allowing one run on four hits.
In the first two innings, the Patriots had the leadoff man aboard, but failed to come up with anything after hitting into a fielder’s choice in the first inning and bounced into a double play in the second frame.
Cumberland got two runs in the third and fifth innings as well as single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to get the 6-0 win. Curtis Hoppe started the game for the Phoenix and tossed a complete game shutout allowing five hits and two free passes.
Drew Kissel (Jeffersonville, Ind.) led the way at the plate going 2-for-3. Reid Battles (Denton, Texas), Josh Wenning and Hector Quinones each finished with one hit apiece.
Up Next: St. Catharine travels to Oakland City, Indiana on Tuesday for a doubleheader with Oakland City (Ind.) on Wednesday before heading to Portsmouth, Ohio where they take on Shawnee State (Ohio) for a three-game series next weekend.
