Lexington, Ky. -- The St. Catharine outdoor track and field team opened up their 2016 slate today when they traveled to Lexington, Ky. for the Pioneer Invitational hosted by Transylvania (Ky.).
The Patriots were led by Shaun Gordon, who won his second event of the season and his first of the outdoor season. The Vine Grove, Ky. won the triple jump with a distance of 13.73 meters (45’ 0.5”).
Gordon also turned in a 10th place finish in the long jump where he turned in a distance of 5.76 meters (18’ 10.75”). Before he participated in the jumping events, Gordon was in action in the 100 meter dash where he finished with a time of 11.48.
Gordon wasn’t the only Patriot to compete in the triple jump as Tyler Dunn (Lexington, Ky.) took home a fifth place finish with a distance of 12.30 meters (40’ 4.75”).
Cody Coffey (Danville, Ky.) and Chris Elliott (Louisville, Ky.) were also in action in the 100 meter dash. Coffey turned in a time of 11.73, while Elliott posted a mark of 11.82.
Austin Middleton (Montgomery, Ala.) broke the school record in the 5000 meter run with a time of 17:05.22. Middleton now holds the school record in both indoor and outdoor events.
The Patriot throwers were led by Cody Cooper (Danville, Ky.) who turned in third place finish in the javelin with a distance of 44.49 meters (145’ 11”).
In the shot put, St. Catharine was led by Mario Bell (Dayton, Ohio). Bell posted a distance of 11.43 meters (37’ 6”), while Derek Clemens (Taylorsville, Ky.) and Andrew Martin (Louisville, Ky.) finished at 11.40 (37’ 5”) and 11.43 meters (36' 10.75"), respectively.
Martin also participated in the discus throw where he took home a sixth place finish. The junior finished with a distance of 34.68 meters (113’ 9”).
On the women’s side, Shaelyn Waller (Louisville, Ky.) led the Patriots in a variety of events at the Pioneer Invitational. The Freshman was first in action in the 100 meter dash where she finished with a time of 12.67 – good enough for a fifth place finish.
Waller then made her way to the 200 meter dash where she posted a sixth place finish with a time of 26.65. In the high jump, she finished in sixth place at 1.42 meters (4’ 4.75”) and she finished in third in the long jump covering a distance of 4.87 meters (15’ 11.75”).
Michaela Sebastian (Waynesburg, Ky.) recorded a personal best in both of her events. In the 100 meter dash she posted a time of 13.75 and followed that up with a 29.71 mark in the 200 meter dash.
Elise Mills (Louisville, Ky.) and Kinsy Shofner (Greensburg, Ky.) both scored team points in the 5000 meter run. Mills finished in sixth place with a time of 21:47.00, while Shofner posted a time of 22:11.14 in eighth place.St. Catharine is back in action this Saturday when they travel to Danville, Ky. for the Centre Invitational hosted by Centre (Ky.).
