Lebanon, Tenn. -- The St. Catharine softball team (17-21, 3-11 MSC) was back in action on Friday afternoon in Lebanon, Tenn. for a Mid-South Conference doubleheader with Cumberland (Tenn.).
The Phoenix (11-19, 7-7 MSC) won the opener of the doubleheader 6-3 and they completed the two-game sweep after winning the second game 8-3. The two teams conclude the four-game series tomorrow for another doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. ET.
Game 1: St. Catharine 6, Cumberland 3
Tiffany Wickline (Georgetown, Ky.) allowed six runs, but only one was earned after her defense committed two crucial errors. Wickline (9-9) tossed five innings, while Brittany McKee (Somerset, Ky.) pitched one inning without allowing a hit.
The Patriots got on the board first with a run on two hits in the first inning. Emily Fenwick (Lebanon, Ky.) singled and moved to second on a wild pitch, then two batters later, Carly Benz (Brooks, Ky.) singled to score Fenwick from second making the score 1-0.
The Phoenix answered with one of their own in the bottom half, but the Patriots came right back with one more in the second. This time it was Lynsie Clark (Morgantown, Ky.) who blasted the first pitch she saw for a solo home run to center field to make the score 2-1.
Cumberland once again answered the run, but this time they put a five spot to take a 6-2 lead. The score would remain like that until the fourth inning when the Patriots scored one run on one hit.
Miranda Whelan (Palmyra, Ind.) put her team on the board after she doubled to right-center field to pull the Patriots to 6-3. That would be as close as the Patriots would get as the home team took the opener 6-3.
Game 2: St. Catharine 4, Cumberland 8
Cumberland took control of the second game early after scoring three runs in the first and five in the fifth en route to the 8-4 win. Jennifer Ortega (Delano, Calif.) allowed all eight runs on 10 hits in 1.2 innings of work in the circle.
Lexi Fugate (Bedford, Ind.) and Brittany McKee tossed the final 4.1 allowing six hits combined. McKee finished with six strikeouts in four innings on the rubber.
St. Catharine got on the board first with two runs on two hits in the opening frame. Emily Fenwick doubled then Tiffany Wickline also doubled scoring Fenwick. Wickline then came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Miranda Whelan.
After Cumberland scored three in the first and five in the second, the Patriots scored one in the fifth. This time it was Kelsey Gravens (Mt. Washington, Ky.) who belted a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence for a solo home run.
St. Catharine made an attempt of a comeback in the top of the seventh inning after having the bases loaded and nobody out, but they only managed to get one run on an RBI ground out by Taylor Lewis (Spring, Texas) as the Phoenix swept the doubleheader with the 8-4 win.
