Portsmouth, Ohio -- After trailing 2-0 heading into the eighth inning, the Patriot baseball team (25-12, 5-5 MSC) scored three runs in the eighth and two in the ninth to get a come from behind victory over Shawnee State (Ohio), 5-2, Friday afternoon.
The Bears (14-20, 4-6 MSC) scored two runs in the first inning, but from that point on Daniel Lerma shutout the home team. The Oxnard, Calif. tossed eight innings allowing two runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts. Lerma moves to 4-3 overall on the season.
Senior right-hander, Jake McCoy (Mesa, Ariz.) entered the game in the ninth and picked up his fifth save of the season. McCoy struck out one while allowing one hit in his only inning on the mound.
St. Catharine struggled to get any offense going against Shawnee State right-hander, Derek Moore. Moore – who defeated the Patriots in the first round of the MSC Tournament last year – allowed three runs on eight hits in his eight innings of work.
The Patriots had their chances to score on Moore throughout the game. In the fourth inning, Tyler Devine (Harrodsburg, Ky.) walked and then Drew Kissel (Jeffersonville, Ind.) doubled, but Devine was thrown out at the plate to keep the game at 2-0 in favor of the Bears.
The visitors threatened again in the fifth inning, but once again came up empty. Carlos Cespedes (Santo Domingo, DR) reached on an error and Reid Battles singled and stole second putting runners at second and third, but Moore worked his way out of the jam.
After having opportunities earlier in the game, the Patriot offense finally broke through in the eighth inning when they scored three runs on four hits to take a 3-2 lead.
Battles led the inning off with single and moved to second on a sac bunt by Josh Wenning (Palmyra, Ind.). Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) pushed the Patriots’ first run across with a single to score Battles from second.
Nicco Lollio (Brownstown, Mich.) kept the rally going with a single, then, Tyler Devine ripped a double to right-center scoring Bohorquez and Lollio to give the Patriots the 3-2 lead.
St. Catharine added two key insurance runs in the ninth inning. Alfredo Bohorquez reached on a bases loaded walk to score the first run and Reid Battles later scored on a pitch in the dirt making the final score 5-3.
Reid Battles led the way at the dish going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Hector Quinones (Barceloneta, PR) pitched in with two hits. Alfredo Bohorquez and Tyler Devine each tallied two RBI’s while Bohorquez, Nicco Lollio and Carlos Cespedes all tallied one run.
The two teams wrap up their three-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon beginning at 12 p.m. ET.
