LERMA TOSSES GEM IN BAT PATS 8-1 WIN OVER PIKEVILLE

St. Catharine, Ky. -- The Patriot baseball team picked up an 8-1 victory over Mid-South Conference foe Pikeville (Ky.) on Saturday afternoon at Edelen-Haydon Field behind the arm of Daniel Lerma.

The senior right-hander from Oxnard, Calif. tossed seven innings allowing just one hit to go with six strikeouts. With the win, Lerma moves to 5-3 overall on the season.

The Patriots (28-13, 7-6 MSC) plated three runs in the second and third innings while adding two more in the seventh en route to the 8-1 win. Pikeville (19-16, 8-5 MSC) plated a run in the eighth, but the Patriots closed the door for the win.

Derek Jones (Mt. Washington, Ky.) started the eighth inning and recorded an out, but left with the bases loaded. James Davenport (Louisville, Ky.) then entered the game and worked his way out of the jam allowing one run that was charged to Jones.

The Patriot offense got going in the second inning with three runs. Carlos Cespedes (Santo Domingo, DR) reached on an errant throw by the second baseman to score Nicco Lollio (Brownstown, Mich.). Tyler Devine (Harrodsburg, Ky.) also came around to score on the error.

Reid Battles (Denton, Texas) capped the second inning off with an RBI single. The Patriots were back at it the next inning with three more runs.

Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) was hit by pitch and stole second to lead the inning off. After Bohorquez moved to third on a wild pitch, Hector Quinones (Barceloneta, PR) ripped an RBI single to score Bohorquez.

Quinones then stole second and scored from third when Evan Smith (Jacksonville, Fla.) reached on a fielder’s choice. Smith’s hustle down the first base line forced an errant throw by the second baseman that allowed Tyler Devine to come around to score.

The Patriots added two more runs in the seventh inning. Devine reached on error by the shortstop that allowed Bohorquez, who reached on a walk earlier in the inning to score. Evan Smith plated the other run on sac fly scoring Nicco Lollio, who singled earlier in the inning.

Neither Evan Smith nor Alfredo Bohorquez recorded a hit, but Smith drove in two runs, while Bohorquez scored twice. Tyler Devine went 2-for-4 at the dish with an RBI and two runs. Hector Quinones, Carlos Cespedes and Reid Battles also finished with one RBI, while Nicco Lollio scored twice.

The two teams will wrap up their three-game series with a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon beginning at 12 p.m. ET at Edelen-Haydon Field.
