St. Catharine, Ky. -- After taking the first game of the three-game series against Pikeville (Ky.) on Saturday, the St. Catharine baseball team secured the series victory after getting a split with the Bears on Sunday afternoon at Edelen-Haydon Field.
The Bears (20-17, 9-6 MSC) got a come from behind victory in the first game to win 5-3, but the Patriots (29-14, 8-7 MSC) sealed the series victory after winning the second game 9-1.
Game 1: St. Catharine 3, Pikeville 5
After St. Catharine held a 3-0 lead, Pikeville scored two runs in the sixth and seventh innings while they added a run in the ninth to come away with the 5-3 win.
Junior right-hander, Joan Pena (New York, N.Y.) got the starting nod for the Patriots and took the no decision. Pena allowed two runs on two hits in his 6.1 innings of work on the mound.
Austin Willis-Greene (Manhattan, N.Y.) took the loss after allowing a two-run home run in the seventh. Joseph Martin (Fort Thomas, Ky.) and James Davenport (Louisville, Ky.) pitched the final two innings. Martin allowed two hits, while Davenport allowed one run in 1.1 innings.
The Patriots got on the board first in the second inning with two runs. Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) started the rally with a single and stolen base. Hector Quinones (Barceloneta, PR) then ripped a double off the right field fence to score Bohorquez from second.
Nicco Lollio (Brownstown, Mich.) capped off the rally with a single to left-center that scored Quinones from second. Then, after a scoreless fourth inning, the Patriots added to their lead with a run in the fifth.
Josh Wenning (Palmyra, Ind.) reach base on an error, then after a balk by the Bears pitcher, Wenning advanced to second. Alfredo Bohorquez drove in Wenning with a single.
After trailing 3-0 after five complete, the Bears began to seize the momentum in the sixth. Pikeville hit a pair of two-run home runs with the first coming in the sixth. They hit the other in the seventh to take the 4-3 lead. They added an insurance run in the ninth to win 5-3.
Alfredo Bohorquez and Nicco Lollio each picked up two hits and an RBI, while Bohorquez tallied a run. Hector Quinones drove in a run and scored one as well, while Josh Wenning also scored a run. Evan Smith (Jacksonville, Fla.) added 2-for-3 day at the plate.
Game 2: St. Catharine 9, Pikeville 1
The nightcap went the way of the home team as they beat out the Bears pitchers for nine run on 14 hits. Marvin Galarza (Arecibo, PR) also gave his club a good outing on the bump. Galarza (7-1) tossed 4.2 innings allowing one unearned run on six hits.
Hector Quinones and Jake McCoy (Mesa, Ariz.) combined to pitch the last 2.1 innings for the Patriots. Quinones pitched 1.1 innings allowing one hit, while McCoy started the seventh and allowed two hits, but struck out the side to seal the 9-1 win.
After the Bears scored an unearned run in the first inning, the Patriots struck with two in the bottom half. Hector Quinones pushed the first run across with an RBI single. Two batters later, Tyler Devine (Harrodsburg, Ky.) ripped an RBI single giving the Patriots a 2-1 lead.
St. Catharine added two more runs in the third inning. Tyler Devine was back at when he roped a double to deep left-center scoring the first run. Drew Kissel (Jeffersonville, Ind.) capped the rally off with a sac fly to right-center making the lead 4-1.
Drew Kissel was back at it in the fifth inning when he singled to score Will Broady (Greenville, Ky.) to make the lead 5-1 in favor of the Patriots. St. Catharine capped the scoring in the sixth inning when they scored four runs on five hits.
Alfredo Bohorquez pushed the first run across with an RBI single, then Hector Quinones follow suite when he ripped a double to deep left-center field scoring a pair. Will Broady scored the final run on a passed ball to make the final score 5-1.
Tyler Devine was perfect at the dish going 4-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI’s. Hector Quinones added a 3-for-4 day with three RBI’s and a run scored. Drew Kissel added a hit and drove in two runs.
Speedsters, Alfredo Bohorquez and Josh Wenning were the catalyst for the Patriot offense. Bohorquez went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored, while Wenning also scored twice. Will Broady also added two runs scored.
Up Next: The Patriots return to action this Tuesday when they travel to Barbourville, Ky. for a midweek affair with Union (Ky.). Following that, the Patriots travel to Cumberlands (Ky.) for a three-game series next weekend.
