Barbourville, Ky. -- The St. Catharine baseball team took a break from Mid-South Conference play on Tuesday afternoon when they traveled to Barbourville, Ky. to take on Union (Ky.).
It was a game full of missed opportunities for the Patriots (29-14) as they left 12 runners on base. The Bulldogs (23-18) plated two runs in the third and another in the fifth for the 3-1 win.
St. Catharine made a late push in the ninth inning where they scored their only run, but the Patriots left the bases loaded as the Bulldogs got a strikeout to end the game and seal the win.
Freshman right-hander, Joseph Martin (Fort Thomas, Ky.) pitched well, but was dealt with a loss. Martin (3-1) struck out six in four innings allowing two runs on five hits.
Carlos Cespedes (Santo Domingo, DR) started the fifth inning allowing one run on three hits. Dylan Manley (Frankfort, Ky.) entered with the bases loaded and two out in the sixth, but worked his way out of the jam.
Peyton Johnson (Louisville, Ky.) and Alex Knowles (Huntington Beach, Calif.) pitched the final 1.1 innings without surrendering a hit.
The Patriots had a golden opportunity to score in the first inning. Josh Wenning (Palmyra, Ind.) singled and moved to second on a ground out. Wenning then stole second and tried to score on an errant throw by the catcher, but Wenning was gunned down at the plate.
After Union scored two in the third to take a 2-0 lead, the Patriots had a chance to answer in the fourth. Nicco Lollio (Brownstown, Mich.) singled and moved to third after a sac bunt and wild pitch. After a two out walk, Lollio was stranded at third after a fly out ended the inning.
Union added a run in the fifth inning, but the Patriots had a chance to answer in the sixth. Back-to-back singles by Nicco Lollio and Tyler Devine (Harrodsburg, Ky.) had two on and one out, but the Bulldogs got a fly out and strikeout to end the threat.
The Patriots attempted to rally in the ninth inning, but only scored one run. After two quick outs, the Patriots loaded the bases for Hector Quinones (Barceloneta, PR). Quinones legged out an infield single scoring one, but Union ended the game with a strikeout to secure the 3-1 win.
Reid Battles (Denton, Texas) was the only Patriot to record multiple hits going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Hector Quinones drove in the only run for the Patriots, while Josh Wenning, Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela), Nicco Lollio and Tyler Devine all had one hit.
