PATRIOT SOFTBALL FALLS TO SEVENTH-RANKED BLUE RAIDERS

Columbia, Ky. -- The Patriot softball team was back in action today when they traveled to Columbia, Ky. to battle Mid-South Conference foe Lindsey Wilson (Ky.).

The Blue Raiders (32-10, 17-3 MSC) entered the doubleheader ranked No. 7 in the nation and they showed why as they swept the Patriots (21-27, 7-17 MSC) 3-0 and 7-3.

Game 1: St. Catharine 0, Lindsey Wilson 3

Box Score

The Blue Raiders scored a run in the fourth and added two insurance runs in the sixth to seal the 3-0 win. Tiffany Wickline (Georgetown, Ky.) pitched well, but couldn’t get any run support. Wickline (10-11) allowed three runs – one earned – on six hits in six innings of work.

The Patriots had a chance in the first inning when Emily Fenwick (Lebanon, Ky.) reached on a fielder’s choice and Miranda Whelan (Ramsey, Ind.) singled putting two on and one out. Lindsey Wilson starter, Casey Bryan, however, worked her way out of the jam unharmed.

Bryan (14-6) tossed the complete game shutout allowing six Patriot hits, while issuing one free pass. Bryan also struck out six Patriot batters.

St. Catharine presented another threat in the sixth inning. Miranda Whelan reached on a one-out walk and two batters later, Tiffany Wickline legged out an infield single. But once again, Bryan worked her way out of the jam with a ground out.

Lindsey Wilson added two runs in the sixth inning and Bryan closed the door in the seventh for the win. Taylor Lewis (Spring, Texas) led the way at the plate going 2-for-4, while four other Patriots tallied one hit each.

Game 2: St. Catharine 2, Lindsey Wilson 7

Box Score

St. Catharine broke through in the second game with two runs, but Lindsey Wilson used a four run sixth inning to seal the 7-2 win. Brittany McKee (Somerset, Ky.) started the game and pitched 5.1 innings allowing seven runs – six earned – on nine hits.

The Patriots struck first with a run on two hits in the first inning. After one quick out, Emily Fenwick ripped a double to deep right. Two batters later, Carly Benz (Brooks, Ky.) followed suite with a double scoring Fenwick to make the score 1-0 in favor of the visitors.

After Lindsey Wilson tied it up with a run in the bottom half, the Patriots came right back in the second. Caitlyn Blair (LaGrange, Ky.) singled and Kelsey Givens (Richmond, Ky.) was called upon to pinch run.

Brittany McKee then reached on a walk advancing Givens into scoring position with nobody out. Lynsie Clark (Morgantown, Ky.) then hit a perfectly placed bunt that allowed Givens to score from second giving the Patriots a 2-1 lead.

The lead for the Patriots, however, was short lived as Lindsey Wilson scored a run in the third tying it up at 2-2. They took the lead the next inning with another run and added four more in the sixth for the 7-2 win.

Up Next: The Patriots will return to the diamond this weekend when they host Shawnee State (Ohio) for a four-game series at Salt River Electric Field. The series begins with a doubleheader on Friday afternoon.
