Williamsburg, Ky. -- The St. Catharine baseball team was back in action on Saturday afternoon in Williamsburg, Ky. when they wrapped up their three-game series with Mid-South Conference foe Cumberlands (Ky.).
St. Catharine (29-18, 8-10 MSC) unfortunately came up short in both games as Cumberlands (29-18, 7-11 MSC) swept the doubleheader winning 6-3 and 2-0. After the dust settles on the weekend, the Patriots drop to sixth place in the MSC standings
Game 1: St. Catharine 3, Cumberlands 6
Joan Pena (New York, N.Y.) took the loss for St. Catharine after allowing six runs – two earned – on seven hits in five innings of work. Pena (5-4) didn’t get any help from his defense as they committed seven errors which led to the four unearned runs.
Freshman right-hander, Joseph Martin (Fort Thomas, Ky.) followed Pena and started the sixth inning. Martin tossed three innings surrendering two hits to go with a pair of strikeouts.
Cumberlands took advantage of three Patriot miscues in the second inning when they scored two unearned runs. St. Catharine cut the deficit in half with a run in the third inning.
After two quick outs, Tyler Devine (Harrodsburg, Ky.) was put on after being hit by a pitch. The next batter, Santiago Arce (Chula Vista, Calif.) ripped a double to deep right-center field scoring Devine from first base.
Cumberlands came right back in the bottom of the fifth when they scored four runs on four hits and two key errors on the St. Catharine defense. Cumberlands took their 6-1 lead to the ninth where the visiting Patriots made it interesting with two runs on two hits.
Santiago Arce reached on a fielder’s choice and Carlos Cespedes (Santo Domingo, DR) was called upon to pinch run. Evan Smith (Jacksonville, Fla.) singled and then Reid Battles (Denton, Texas) roped a double scoring Cespedes.
After the double by Battles, Drew Kissel (Jeffersonville, Ind.) grounded out scoring Smith’s pinch runner, Jamaal Wilson (Vine Grove, Ky.) from third base. Cumberlands worked their way out of the inning with a ground out to end the game and seal the 6-3 win.
Game 2: St. Catharine 0, Cumberlands 2
After committing seven errors in the first game, the Patriot defense improved committing just one in the second game, but Cumberlands sealed the sweep with a 2-0 win. Cumberlands scored two runs in the third and held St. Catharine to just two hits for the win.
Junior right-hander, Marvin Galarza (Arecibo, PR) took the loss for the Patriots. Galarza (7-2) tossed four innings allowing two runs on four hits. Jake McCoy (Mesa, Ariz.) followed Galarza and was dominant in his two innings. McCoy fanned four and didn’t allow a hit.
The St. Catharine offense struggled as they collected just two hits off UC starter Jeff Rivera. Rivera tossed the complete game allowing two free passes while striking out eight.
Rivera didn’t allow a hit until the fifth when Santiago Arce ripped a two-out triple, but he got a ground out to end the inning. SCC collected their other hit in the sixth inning when Reid Battles led off the frame with a single, but was later caught stealing in an attempt to take third.
Up Next: St. Catharine returns to the diamond this Tuesday when they host Union (Ky.) at Edelen-Haydon Field beginning at 3:30 p.m. ET. The Bulldogs won their meeting earlier this week 3-1 in Barbourville, Kentucky.
