Bowling Green, Ky. -- After the first round of the Mid-South Conference Men’s Golf Championships at Bowling Green Country Club, the Patriot men’s golf team sits in a tie for fifth place.
The Patriots shot a 307 in the first round and currently sits in a three-way tie for fifth place with Campbellsville (Ky.) and Georgetown (Ky.). Cumberlands (Ky.) leads the eight-team field after a round one score of 288.
Junior Cole Ballard led the way after shooting a 2-over 74 in the first round. After the first 18 holes, the Bardstown, Ky. native sits in a tie for 11th. Ballard started at No. 1 and made eight straight pars before making a bogey on the par-4 ninth hole.
Ballard then made the turn for the back nine where he made bogey on the par-3 11th. He recovered to birdie the par-5 14th, but bogeyed the 15th and 16th holes. Ballard, however, ended on a high note with a birdie on the par-4 17th.
Logan Medley (Lebanon, Ky.) finished two shots back of Ballard after firing a four-over 76. Medley birdied his first hole, but finished the front nine with a four-over 40. The sophomore played the back nine at even par and birdied his last hole, the par-5 18th.
Aaron Spalding (Springfield, Ky.) and Gran Hayes (Lawrenceburg, Ky.) rounded out the scoring for the Patriots. Spalding carded a five-over 76 in the first round, while Hayes finished with an eight-over 80. Spalding made 11 pars in his round and Hayes had three birdies.
Seniors Michael Hardin (Bloomfield, Ky.) and Michael Vuick (Taylorsville, Ky.) were also in action at Bowling Green. Hardin finished with an 81 and Vuick turned in an 88.
