St. Catharine, Ky. -- The St. Catharine baseball team began their final Mid-South Conference series of the regular season today when they hosted Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) for a twinbill at Edelen-Haydon Field.
The Patriots (31-19, 9-11 MSC) could only come up with two hits in the first game as the Blue Raiders (33-19, 13-7 MSC) scored two runs in the ninth for the 2-0 win. St. Catharine battled back to split the doubleheader after getting a 5-1 win in the nightcap.
Drew Kissel, Cody Kollenberg, Dylan Manley, Tyler Devine, Santiago Arce, Nicco Lollio, Daniel Lerma, Evan Smith and Alex Knowles were all honored for Senior Day as they will play their final home game when the series wraps up with a game tomorrow at 1 p.m. ET.
Game 1: St. Catharine 0, Lindsey Wilson 2
The opener was a pitcher’s duel as the starting pitchers for both teams tossed all nine innings. Unfortunately for St. Catharine starter, Daniel Lerma (Oxnard, Calif.), he was dealt with the loss. Lerma (5-4) tossed nine innings allowing two runs on eight hits.
After neither team scored in the first eight innings, Lindsey Wilson struck with two runs in the ninth inning. The Blue Raiders got a leadoff double and three batters later an RBI single to push the first run across. They went on to add another run in the inning to take a 2-0 lead.
The two runs were more than enough for Lindsey Wilson starter, Scott Sebald. Sebald (7-3) tossed a complete game shutout allowing just two hits while striking out eight.
The Patriots had an opportunity to score first in the second inning. Tyler Devine (Harrodsburg, Ky.) led the inning off with a walk and Drew Kissel (Jeffersonville, Ind.) singled, while Evan Smith (Jacksonville, Fla.) advanced the runners to second and third with a sac bunt.
Sebald worked his way out of the jam after he got back-to-back ground outs to end the threat. Sebald allowed a leadoff single in the fifth, but from that point on he didn’t allow a hit as the Blue Raiders won the first game 2-0.
Game 2: St. Catharine 5, Lindsey Wilson 1
The Patriots’ luck changed in the second game as they walked away with a 5-1 win to split the doubleheader. The home team scored a run in the first followed by four runs in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead.
Lindsey Wilson didn’t score until the fifth inning when Joan Pena (New York, N.Y.) allowed a two-out solo home run. That would be all Pena (6-4) would allow as the Blue Raiders scattered three hits on the right-hander. Pena finished with five strikeouts over seven innings.
The Patriots got on the board first with a run on one hit in the first inning. After Hector Quinones (Barceloneta, PR) reached on a fielder’s choice and Nicco Lollio walked, Tyler Devine came through with an RBI single to score Quinones from second to make the score 1-0.
St. Catharine was right back at it in the second with four more runs. Evan Smith reached on an error and Reid Battles (Denton, Texas) laid down a bunt as the pitcher rushed the throw and threw it into right field putting runners at second and third with no one out.
Josh Wenning (Palmyra, Ind.) laid down a picture perfect bunt down the third base line to load the bases. Next up was Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) who broke the school record when he ripped his 11th triple of the season to right field that scored three runs.
The next batter was Hector Quinones who grounded out to shortstop to score Bohorquez from third and make the lead 5-0. The five run cushion was more than enough for Pena who allowed just the home run in the fourth inning as the Patriots won it 5-1.
