Thursday afternoon the Blue Raiders JV women’s soccer team from Lindsey Wilson College came to St. Catharine for a match. It was a perfect day for soccer; sunny, breezy, and not very hot. The Lady Patriots were looking for a strong showing after a 2-2 start and after losing a 1-0 game at Lindsey last fall.

The game started out all St. Catharine. The Lady Patriots got the kickoff and took the ball deep into Blue Raider territory. SCC held the ball in the Lindsey half for the first 15 minutes of the game but the Lindsey Wilson defense proved up to the task. Despite several opportunities off crosses and corner kicks, the Lady Patriots couldn’t find the net and the match remained scoreless.

The 0-0 tie was broken in the 26th minute when Kara Morehead put a cross into the box. Lindsey’s Keeper tried to field it, but the ball came off her hands and was slotted home by an alert Haley Reed to put SCC up 1-0. St. Catharine kept the pressure up and would widen the lead off 2 goals from Monica Milesky. One came in the 33rd minute from a sharply angled shot, and the other in the 40th minute off a pass from Amy Wurfel. The half finished with SCC up 3-0.

The second half started and St. Catharine attacked right away. Danielle Mistler, playing in center defense, won a ball in the middle of the field and made a remarkable dribbling run up the right side and then into the middle for a shot from the top of the penalty box. The shot sailed into the upper left corner for an unassisted goal and a 4-0 SCC lead.

Lindsey Wilson threatened twice in the second half on free kicks and then once more on a solid shot up the middle from Lynn Bradley, but couldn’t finish one off for a goal. SCC forward Abby Riggs scored on a header from a cross by Amy Wurfel in the 73rd minute to end the scoring and give SCC a 5-0 win. The Lady Patriots now stand at 3-2-0 for the season. They are in action again on Sunday, September 16th at home against Cumberland University (TN) at 1pm.
