On Sunday, September 16, the Lady Patriot soccer team took the field looking to win their third straight game against a strong NAIA, Transouth Conference team from Cumberland University (Lebanon, TN). The game got off to a rocky start as the Bulldogs immediately put pressure on the SCC goal. SCC looked somewhat bewildered as they couldn’t put together any kind of possession. Constantly on their heals, SCC surrendered 4 goals in the first 8 minutes of the game before settling down and asserting themselves in the game.
SCC started to control the ball a little more and was able to mount some offense, but it was too late, as the damage had been done. SCC fought hard through the rest of the first half, but gave up two more goals for a 6-0 halftime deficit.
The second half was a different ballgame as the Lady Patriots came out determined to show their mettle against the Bulldogs, no matter the score. Cumberland controlled the majority of the play early on, but was unable to crack the SCC defense for another goal and slowly, SCC began to put pressure on the CU goal. Despite several attempts, SCC was unable to score but the defense held strong to keep the second half scoreless.
With the 6-0 loss, the Lady Patriots fall to 3-3-0 on the season and will next host Spalding University at 3pm on Thursday, September 20th.
