The SCC Women’s soccer team traveled to Williamsburg, Kentucky to take on The University of the Cumberlands JV team on Thursday. As the game started, it was a very evenly fought affair. This was to be expected as the teams had played each other to a 1-1 tie earlier in the season. Twenty nine minutes into the half, SCC earned a corner kick and Kara Morehead sent the ball into the penalty box. Haley Reed connected on the back end and kicked the ball in for a 1-0 SCC lead. Seven minutes later, Cumberlands would even the score on a corner kick of their own. The half would end even at 1-1.
The second half looked to be much the same as both teams fought pretty evenly through the first fifteen minutes. Slowly, however, SCC began to take more and more control of the game. Finally, in the 68th minute, Rae Midkiff scored her first goal of the season off a pass from Kara Morehead to put SCC up 2-1. From that point on, SCC controlled the tempo of the match. Five minutes later, Amy Wurfel of SCC made a spectacular play, stripping the ball from a Cumberlands’ defender and carrying it into the box. She was fouled in the penalty box, which resulted in a penalty kick for SCC. Haley Reed took the penalty kick. The Cumberlands keeper made a good save on the kick, but the ball bounced up off her hands and hit the crossbar, rebounding back into the field of play right to Reed’s feet. She neatly put the ball into the corner of the net for the 2 goal lead.
Cumberlands threatened once more in the game, but the SCC defense held strong and the Lady Patriots won 3-1. The Lady Patriots record now stands at 4-4-1 for the season.
