Saturday, August 29 - The St. Catharine College Women's Soccer team opened the 2009 season with a home match versus Kentucky Christian University at Barber Field today. The Patriots were looking for a good showing against at KCU team they had defeated 3-0 in the 2008 season opener at KCU. After two exhibition losses, a win would be a boost to the team's confidence, and would kick off the 2009 season in a positive way.
SCC kicked off, and shortly thereafter lost the ball out of bounds. However, the Lady Patriots soon settled down and began to press the attack. SCC took 21 shots to KCU's 1 in the first half, but only managed to score 1 goal as Freshman Krista Russell finished off a pass from Amy Wurfel 15 minutes into the game. Despite dominating the time of possession, the issue was still in doubt as the Patriots took a slim 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
SCC controlled the play the entire second half of the game. The Patriots increased the pressure and peppered the goal with shot after shot. Goals were hard to come by, as KCU Goalkeeper, Olivia Katt stood strong between the pipes with 28 saves on the game. The Patriots got on the board a second time as Senior Danielle Mistler fed Monica Milesky for a goal midway through the half. Nine minutes later, Krista Russell scored a second time off a pass from Caitlin Campbell to increase the lead to three.
With the outcome decided, and SCC still controlling the play, Danielle Mistler and Cheyenne Hess each scored in the last two minutes of the game off feeds from Megan Metcalf and Nicolette Catlett respectively. The game ended with the final score SCC 5 - KCU 0. Lee Ann Walker recorded the shutout in goal for St. Catharine. Next up, the Patriots will host Ursuline College on Friday, September 4.
