Monday, August 23, 2010 - The SCC Women's Soccer team kicked off the 2010 season today with a trip to nearby Asbury University for their first pre-season scrimmage. Asbury defeated the Patriots 5-0 in the same pre-season scrimmage last year on their way to a 16-7-0 season in which they won the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship and moved on to the NAIA National Tournament.
Despite playing three, 30 minute periods, the match had the feel of a mid-season contest as both teams came out playing strong, organized soccer. Early on, SCC just missed an opportunity to score off a free kick and Asbury came back to hit a cross off the front goalpost later in the period. The second period saw Asbury control for most of the first 18 minutes as the Patriot Coaching Staff moved several players around to work on combinations. However, late in the period SCC pushed back and earned several looks at goal. With both keepers playing well, neither team was able to put one away and the second period ended with the score still knotted at 0-0. The last thirty minute period brought some furious action and an intense battle to win the match. Neither team budged until late, when SCC had several shots on goal and Asbury getting a late charge that resulted in another shot rebounding off the goalpost in the last 10 seconds of the game. At the final horn, the game ended in a draw with the score remaining 0-0.
Patriot Coach Paul Patton commented after the match, "I think it was a great scrimmage for us. We got to see what most of our players can do, and we got a great result, considering the score of the match last season. I think it's safe to say that we are definitely improving as a program. It's great to see Lindsey Vinson get her first collegiate shutout tonight, because this will alleviate a lot of the nervousness for her and the other first year players."
