Saturday, October 9, 2010 - The SCC Women's Soccer team hosted the West Virginia University Institute of Technology in a Mid South Conference match today a Barber Field. The match was a hard fought affair throughout with the home team Patriots coming out the victor, 2-1.
SCC controlled much of the first half, with Krista Russell getting behind the Golden Bear defense for two early shots. In the 18th minute Russell sent a diagonal pass in to Emily Caras for a run-out that Caras slotted into the net for a 1-0 SCC lead. Tech fought back with several shots of their own and earned a corner kick but SCC hung tough and were able to score a second goal with 5 minutes left in the half on the same Russell to Caras combination.
The early going in the second half was all Tech as the Bears tried to get back into the match. 9 minutes in, the Bears cut the lead in half with a long dribbling run by Caroline McKelvie that she turned in to the box and scored just outside the net. SCC fought back and earned a corner kick and two shots by Russell and Michelle Dunaway, but were unable to score the rest of the way. Tech pressured the goal heavily in the last 10 minutes but were unable to capitalize and the game ended with SCC winning 2-1.
The Patriots now stand at 5-6-0 overall and 2-3 in the conference. The second win in the MSC matches last season's conference win total with 3 games left to go. The Patriot travel to Berea College on Tuesday, October 12.
