Gehler makes honorable mention All-Conference
It was doubtful that Samantha Gehler would make much impact on the St. Catharine College volleyball season after suffering a high ankle sprain at the outset of the Patriots’ schedule. But, even though that injury sidelined the 5-9 freshman her for nearly one-third of the season, Gehler was able to contribute in a big way once she hit the court.
And because of her play, the 2008 graduate of Amelia High School was named to the honorable mention All Mid-South Conference team. This is the first year St. Catharine has participated in the NAIA and the Mid-South Conference after transitioning from junior college status.
“Honestly, I think Sam would have made first team all-conference if she could have played the entire season,” said St. Catharine coach Juanita Mangan. “She missed the first 14 matches and even when she got back she was slow for two or three weeks due to the injury.”
When she did get back, Gehler, who was primarily a right-side blocker in high school, was asked to do a little of everything for the Patriots. “We had her hit at all three positions, she set some and played good defense on the back row,” added Mangan.
That versatility showed up in the final statistics. Gehler led the team in kills, in service aces and was third on the team in blocks.
