In Mid-South Conference basketball played Thursday at St. Catharine College the Patriots faced University of Virginia-Wise.
In the opener the St. Catharine women won 80-74 led by Carol Ruiz-Lopez’ 29 points. Lopez connected on seven 3-point goals in 12 attempts. Danielle Brown added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Patriots while Courtney Milam and Sa’de Mullins had 12 points each.
The win moves the women’s record to 8-9 overall and 3-2 in conference play. UVA-Wise dropped to 5-7 overall and 0-5 in the conference.
The men’s contest turned into a foul-fest as the two teams were whistled for a total of 60 personal fouls. The Patriots found themselves in a battle as they trailed by two with less than six minutes to play but won the game at the foul line, pulling away late for the 94-81 win.
St. Catharine was led by Kashiff Carr’s 20 points. Senior center Ervin Williams added 18 points and 10 rebounds.
St. Catharine, ranked 15th nationally in the NAIA, improved to 10-2 with the win including 4-1 in the Mid-South. UVA-Wise record evened at 7-7 and 1-4 in the conference.
Both Patriot teams are back at home Saturday for a conference doubleheader against Pikeville College. The women start at 2:00 followed by the men’s game at 4:00.
