The Patriot roundball teams journeyed to Portsmouth, Ohio on Saturday to take on Mid-South Conference foe Shawnee State. The men left with a 92-80 victory but the St. Catharine women fell to the Bears 66-47.
The men’s victory kept J.T. Burton’s team in a second place tie with Cumberlands in the conference. Both teams are 8-3 which puts them two games behind Georgetown (10-1). The 13th ranked Patriots are now 14-5 overall.
Lena Bramblett’s women saw their conference record slip to 3-8 which puts them in seventh place in the MSC. They are now 8-15 overall after suffering their sixth consecutive setback.
Saturday saw the Patriot women endure their poorest shooting of the season as they shot 29 percent (18-62) from the field that included 4-23 (17 percent) from three-point range. But even with the off-night from the field, the Patriots found themselves down by just 10 points when a trey by Carol Ruiz-Lopez made the score 50-40 with 7:23 to play.
But following the Ruiz-Lopez basket, the Patriots failed to score for the next 5:20 and the Bears (19-4, 10-1) took a 60-40 lead and cruised to the win.
Freshman forward Rianne Hofstraat was the only Patriot in double figures with 12 points. Lopez, a freshman guard, had a team high eight rebounds but Shawnee held a 46-36 rebounding edge.
The Patriot men looked like they would have a breather against the Bears who came into the game 7-14 overall and 2-8 in the conference, one of those conference wins coming against Georgetown who is 21-2. And the Patriots did breathe easy for three-fourths of the game.
St. Catharine blistered the nets with 60 percent shooting for the game that led them to a 48-32 halftime lead and a 70-47 advantage with 10 minutes to play.
But the Bears emerged from hibernation to cut the lead to just eight points on two occasions, the second time at 84-76 with 1:42 to play. The Patriots held on with some clutch baskets inside, however, to escape with the 12 point victory.
The Patriot’s three leading scorers for the game were a combined 21 of 29 from the field. Kashiff Carr (11-15) led the way with 29 points and Xavier Keeling (5-9) had 19 points. Ervin Williams was 5-5 from the field and 2-2 from the foul line for 12 points.
Both St. Catharine teams will return to conference play this week with two home games in Lourdes Hall. Thursday night, West Virginia Tech visits with the women starting at 6:00 followed by the men at 8:00. On Saturday, Rio Grande provides the opposition with the women’s game starting at 2:00 followed by the men at 4:00.
