BAT PATS EARN FIRST WIN OF SEASON

Go 1-3 on the Opening Weekend

The Patriot Baseball Team picked up their first win of the season Sunday, in exciting fashion, beating University of Mobile 5-4 in eight innings.  The Bat Pats fell 5-3 in the nightcap for the split.

SC scored 3 runs in the top of the sixth inning to take the 3-1 lead.  Ryan Mangione, (Lexington, KY) led the inning off with a double and scored on a Juan Moriel (San Diego, CA) single.  Andrew Garcia (Las Vegas, NV) knocked in Moriel with a fielders choice and scored on a Luis Zeledon (Los Angeles, CA) double.  The Rams tied the game in the bottom of the 7th inning off Patriot closer Brad Krohman (Florence, KY) to send it to extra innings.

The Patriots responded with 2 runs in the eighth when Moriel walked and advanced to third on an error off the bat of Patrick Jones (Lexington, KY).  Garcia picked up his second RBI with a single and Richie Stanley (Owensboro, KY) singled home Jones with a perfect drag bunt.  Krohman (1-0) held on in the bottom half to earn the win.  Starter Tim Paxton (Louisville, KY) tossed 6 strong innings, allowing 1 earned run on 5 hits with 5 K's.

In the nightcap, the Patriots banged out a season high 9 hits, but left 7 runners stranded in the 5-3 loss.  Carlos Hernandez (Fresno, CA) went 2-4 with a double, RBI and run.  Juan Moriel (San Diego, CA) went 2-4 with a solo homerun. Patrick Jones (Lexington, KY), Adam Blair (Lebanon, KY) and Ryan Mangione all tallied doubles for the Pats.  Anthony Thorn (Elizabethtown, KY) suffered his first loss, tossing 3 innings and allowing 4 runs, 3 earned on 7 hits.  The bullpen of Matt Wagner (Brooks, KY), Cory Klinger (Rushsylvania, OH) Scott Clemmons (Shelbyville, KY) and Chase Williams (Glasgow, KY) tossed the final 9 outs, allowing a run.

On Saturday, the Patriots lost both ends of a double header, 4-2 in the season opener and 7-1.  In the opener, the Patriots tallied 6 hits and earned 7 walks, but left 9 runners on base.  Garcia went 2-4 and was the only Patriot with two hits.  Hernandez doubled and scored, Moriel singled and scored a run and Stanley added an RBI single.  Jeremy Turpin (Lawrenceburg, KY) went 1-1 with a double and 2 base on balls.  Josh Jillson (Wales, ME) started and hurled 5 solid innings.  He allowed 4 runs, 3 earned on 5 hits.  Taylor Boone (Shelbyville, KY) and Adam Gillcrist (Burlington, KY) tossed a scoreless 6th.

In the second game of the day, the Patriots made 5 errors in the bottom of the first inning, allowing 6 runs 1 earned in a 7-1 loss.  Starter Matt Pavelich (Tucson, AZ) pitched a strong 5 innings, allowing just 2 earned on eight scattered hits.  Clemmons tossed a scoreless 6th.  The Patriot bats found five hits with a pinch hit RBI single by Tyler Mischel (St. Louis, MO) being one of them.  Garcia singled and scored the only Patriot run.

The Pats go to 1-3 on the season and travel to #16 Union University this Friday and Saturday in Jackson, TN.
