In Mid-South Conference college basketball Thursday night the University of Cumberlands visited St. Catharine College. In the women’s game Cumberlands topped the Patriots 80-67. In the men’s game St. Catharine won 76-63 as they led wire to wire.
The Patriot women faced just a 34-33 halftime deficit but Cumberlands opened the second half with an 8-2 run and they never trailed again. The Patriots were led in scoring by Danielle Brown with 14 points. Machera Calhoun added 13. Lauren Wombles had 30 points and 10 rebounds for Cumberlands. The loss gives the Patriot women an overall record of 11-18 and a conference mark of 6-11. Cumberlands improved to 16-13 overall and 10-7 in the conference.
The St. Catharine men grabbed an 8-0 lead to start the game and never trailed in the battle for second place in the conference. They were led in scoring by Kashiff Carr with 32 points. Ervin Williams added 13 points and 11 rebounds and Xavier Keeling had 10 points. The men now hold a 19-7 record overall with a 13-4 record in the Mid-South.
Both teams are back in action Saturday for the final regular season games. The Patriots host Lindsey Wilson College. The women’s game starts at 2:00 followed by the men at 4:00. The day will include the naming of Mr. and Ms. St. Catharine between games. Also, all Patriot seniors will be recognized as they play their final regular season home game.
