Facing two ranked opponents on the road this week, the Patriots find themselves at .500 with a 2-2 record. On Tuesday, the Bat Pats faced #5 Union College (10-0-1) in Barbourville and then Thursday they squared off with #36 Campbellsville University (7-2) in Campbellsville and came away with loses by the scores 13-1 and 11-4.
At Union, a 2-1 game in the fourth jumped to a 13-1 loss in a hurry as the Patriots lost their command on the mound and kicked the ball around. 7 walks, a hit batter and 4 Patriot errors and timely Bulldog hitting led to the first loss on the season. Junior Bryan Jones (0-1) took the loss allowing 5 runs, 0 earned on 4 hits in his first outing of the year. At the plate, the Patriots had eight hits with junior Chris Smith leading the way with a 3-4 day and the only Patriot RBI. Junior Justin Witt added a double for the only extra base hit.
At Campbellsville, the Patriot command and defense aided the hot hitting Tigers to a 11-4 loss. Sophomore Adam Gillcrist (0-1) tossed the first three innings allowing 5 runs, 3 earned on 7 hits to take the loss. The Patriot arms walked or hit 9 CU players on the day to go with a Tiger offense that had 16 hits. The SCC defense also misplayed 3 batted balls. Junior Justin Witt was the only SCC player with 2 hits with his 2-4 day. Junior Kaleb Henry went 1-3 with a 2-run homer and junior Josh Landers added a triple and run scored.
The Patriots (2-2) are back in action Saturday at home with a single game against visiting Indiana University Northwest at 2:00. On Sunday, SCC will play a double-header against IUN at 12:00.
