The Patriot Baseball Team (31-25-1) beat #1 seed Campbellsville University and #3 seed University of the Cumberlands in route to the winner's bracket final, but fell to Shawnee State University Sunday night 8-4 in the Mid-South Conference tournament. SC plays Campbellsville University this Friday in the loser's bracket final to get back to Shawnee State on Saturday.
St. Catharine opened the tournament with an upset of top seeded Campbellsville University, 9-3. The Patriots found themselves down 3 before scoring 2 in the top of the fifth to trim the Tiger lead. The Patriots took the lead for good in the top of the sixth when Andrew Garcia (Las Vegas, NV) singled and scored on a homerun by Alan Stoupa (McLean, VA). The Bat Pats would widen their lead, scoring 3 runs in the 7th and 2 more in the 8th for the final score.
Tim Paxton (Louisville, KY) picked up the win, tossing 6 innings, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on six hits. Anthony Thorn (Elizabethtown, KY) and Cory Klinger (Rushsylvania, OH) tossed the final four innings. The two combined to allow just one hit and punched out 6 Tigers. Jeremy Turpin (Lawrenceburg, KY) went 3-3 with 2 RBI's and a run. Garcia had 2 hits and scored 3 runs and had a RBI.
The Patriots scored 5 runs in the 8th inning for their second straight upset of a higher seed when they beat #3 seed University of the Cumberlands, 8-7. SC found themselves down the entire game before scoring 2 runs in the 7th, setting up the big eighth inning. The big hit was a bases loaded double by Tyler Mischel (St, Louis, MO) that tied the game. A sac fly by Garcia scored Juan Moriel (San Diego, CA) for the game winner. Matt Pavelich (Tucson, AZ) picked up the win in relief and Matt Wagner (Brooks, KY) picked up his 4th save of the year.
Every Patriot notched a hit in the game. SC was lead by Mischel, who went 3-5 with 3 RBI's and scored a run. Moriel and Ryan Mangione (Lexington, KY) both added 2 hits apeice and 2 runs each.
In the winner's bracket final, the Patriots committed 8 errors which led to 5 unearned runs, falling to Shawnee State University 8-4. The Patriots scored 3 runs in the 4th to make it a 1 run game, but could not find the big hit to get any closer. Carlos Hernandez (Fresno, CA), Garcia and Mischel each tallied 2 hits for the Bat Pats. Garcia added and RBI and scored 2 runs. Adam Blair (Lebanon, KY) added a 2 RBI single.
Josh Jillson (Wales, ME) suffered the loss in his 2.1 innings of work, allowing 4 runs (2 earned). Thorn tossed 4 innings, allowing 4 runs (1 earned) and Klinger threw the final 2.2 innings, with no runs allowed.
The Patriots will play Friday against Campbellsville University in Campbellsville. Gametime has yet to be determined. If the Patriots win, they will meet Shawnee State on Saturday and would have to beat them twice to win the MSC Tournament.
