Washington County centerfielder Ben Simms will continue his baseball career right at home. Simms made that official Wednesday by signing a scholarship offer with St. Catharine College. He will join older brother Joe Joe Simms who will be a junior second baseman for the Patriots.
“Ben is a good athlete and a good competitor,” said St. Catharine head coach Luther Bramblett. “I like to bring guys in who played dual sports in high school as Ben did. They know how to compete.”
Washington County head coach Derek Schuler had similar compliments for Simms who batted .367 for the Commanders this spring. “He is a great kid to coach and a real competitor. He had two home runs and six runs batted in in the district championship game. He will only get better in college.”
Simms said he would be comfortable in any of the three outfield positions but realizes that the transition will come with challenges. “The size of the fields will be one big difference, with so much more ground to cover. And the pitching is so much better at the college level.”
