The 2011 SC Soccer season opened Saturday, as the Patriot's blistered the nets in a scrimmage match at Berea College. Senior Chris Brady scored, leading a host of Patriots that scored as well, as the St Catharine men's soccer team defeated Berea College in their first preseason match 7-0.
The Patriots got the scoring started early as freshman defender Jonathan Read (Kent England) went forward scored as his shot went off the post and into the back of the net. Read's goal was quickly followed by 2 goals by freshmen Ashley Woods (Manchester England) and freshman Anthony Steele (Kent England).
Redshirt freshman Justin Mills (Louisville, Ky) started in goal and kept a clean sheet going into halftime. Sophmore Zack Bailes (Mercer County) replaced Mills and immediately made an impact as he turned away a barrage of shots and a breakaway chance.
The scoring continued as Senior Chris Brady (Nelson county HS) scored followed by freshman Tyler Shewmaker (Louisville, Ky) and junior Rex Catron (Winchester, Ky). "It was a great preseason match for us. It was the first opportunity for many of the guys to play against a well coached collegiate team. Everyone contributed and it was great to see Chris Brady get a goal on the eve of his birthday score a nice goal." Coach Tim Wolz said after the game.
The team travels to Kentucky Wesleyan on Sunday for another preseason test. The games are updated live on the group Facebook page (SCC men's soccer).
