The St. Catharine volleyball team has now played two matches without losing a set in either contest. But Tuesday in Lourdes Hall it didn’t appear that it would be another straight set win as the visiting Robert Morris Eagles stormed to a 12-4 lead in the third set after Adam Stevenson’s team won the first two in close fashion.
But the Patriots overcame that eight point deficit to notch an exciting 25-23 in set three as they shot down the Eagles (0-1) 3-0. The Patriots claimed the lead at 21-20 but saw the visitors rally for a 23-21 lead. But a kill by Shauna Stone (Cox’s Creek, Ky.) tied the game at 23-23 and then the game winner came on a Casey Stone (Princeton, Ky.) block as the large student crowd erupted.
“We just didn’t quit on any point and that was the difference in the match,” said Stevenson. “We played with a lot of heart and hustle.”
Set one was close until the Patriots broke a 12-12 tie with an 11-1 run en route to a 25-20 win. The eagles held a 14-12 lead in the second set but, again, the Patriots rallied with an 11-5 spurt and went on to win 25-21.
Freshman Charlotte Jewell (Mt. Washington, Ky.) had her second consecutive double-double with six kills, 29 assists and 12 digs. Shauna Stone had nine kills and hit at a .350 clip. Porsha Ellison (Salem, Ore.) had 10 kills.
“Mandy Gray (Princeton, Ky.) also came up big with 16 digs and did well in serve receive,” added Stevenson.
The Patriots are back in action Thursday with two matches at Fisk University in Tennessee. At 4:00 they take on the host Fisk University and at 6:00 they play Tennessee Wesleyan.
