No hats were tossed on the field Thursday afternoon but it would have been appropriate considering the performance of St. Catharine College forward Ashley Woods. The freshman from Manchester, England scored a hat trick to lead the Patriots to a 3-0 win over visiting Cincinnati Christian University in a game played at Nelson County High School.
Woods’ three goals, and outstanding St. Catharine defense anchored by goalkeeper Justin Mills, gave the Patriots their first win of the season as their record improved to 1-4-1. The Golden Eagles fell to 1-6 with the loss.
The game was scoreless until Woods scored with 2:48 to go in the first half off an assist from Jonathan Read (Kent, England). Then, as time wound down in the opening period, Woods broke free from a defender and scored with just one second to play after taking a pass from Nini Mohamed (Nairobi, Kenya).
Woods closed out the scoring with 11:06 to play in the game on an unassisted goal. The Golden eagles had their chances but were turned away by Mills who had four saves. Two of those chances came on penalty kicks. In the first half Mills made a leaping save and in the second half the Golden Eagles PK sailed wide left.
St. Catharine dominated play with 21 total shots, 16 of them on goal.
The Patriots will be back in action Monday with a Mid-South Conference game at the University of the Cumberlands.
