The Lady Patriots were looking for a win after the loss to Trevecca. What they got was much more.
After a hard fought victory over the Rio Grande Red Storm on Saturday, Patriot Coach Paul Patton noted, "This was a huge lift for us. Not only did we get our first conference win, but we turned it around on a team that beat us 2-0 last season. After a couple of less than stellar outings, the team played with high intensity for the whole game. This points us in the right direction going into the meat of the conference schedule."
Paola Martinez opened the scoring midway through the first half as she headed a cross from Caitlin Campbell into the goalmouth. Rio's 'keeper deflected it, and Martinez followed up her head with a shot into the net to finish the score. Rio threatened late in the half, but the Patriot defense held to take a 1-0 lead into the intermission.
Rio came out fast in the second half looking to even the score. After an initial foray into the Patriot defensive end, St. Catharine matched their intensity and made a push of their own. With 25 minutes left in the game, the Patriots earned a corner kick. Adrienne Bishop served a ball in that dropped in near the back post and Emily Grulke slotted it in to double the lead at 2-0.
The Red Storm made several late pushes into Patriot territory to try and cut the lead with no avail. St. Catharine held strong and took the game with a 2-0 score. The victory raises the Patriots' record to 3-4 on the season and 1-1 in the Mid South Conference play.
